Choosing NOT to pursue the main quest

I don't think so, in a preview someone got some sort of animal friend shout, and it was at the start of the game. Maybe you can't actually use it until you do something with the main quest, though.

That's not a shout that's a racial ability.

The Bosmer get the Animal friend ability which lets them turn an animal to an ally once a day.

I can just imagine the animal friend shout now:

"Hey! Dog!! GET YOUR BIT** A** OVER HERE!!!"

Haha! :D

So, basically if you pursue the main quest, you get lots of dragons to fight? What if you don't want to go searching for dragons, but instead protect your home city from them?

Hopefully they will still attack cities even without doing the MQ.

Ehh there'll be a mod for this. Virtually guaranteed. :whistling:

In nearly 4k hrs of play across three games(MW,OB and FO3) I have yet to complete the main quest in any of the them.

Holy sheet. Around 167 days, and you still haven't completed the story? Wow.

For myself, I will complete the story as my first character. I'm not as excited about the storyline or dragons, as I am for what Elder Scrolls does best, open world. I want to go and explore, occasionally progressing on the main quest.

Traditionally I'll finish the main story the first time I play the game. But with future characters I'll most probably concentrate on everything else in the gameworld instead, and mods. As already mentioned in the thread, I too think the main story will be in different stages, giving the player a chance to take a break from it now and then. So I dont think it will be a problem to reach a point where you have dragons and dragonshouts and all that without having to continue playing the main story. I just hope the dragons wont completely disappear from Skyrim when you finish it, as Oblivion-gates did in Oblivion (Or did they not? Memory has faded!).
