VincentIcarus
Okay, so I'm a big fan of CSI (Las Vegas not the crappy spin-offs) and yesterday I was watching The Boondock Saints and I noticed that when the saints were shot in the shootout with *SPOILER ALERT* their dad, they sprayed ammonia on the blood splatter. When the detective showed up, he said it was completely useless. I'm assuming that they can't even recognize blood type much less DNA. Is that true? Or were they just referring to the blood not being useable as DNA evidence?
McclaudEagle
The ammonia might have made the blood unusable as evidence due to contamination. I doubt it would be that they can't detect the blood type and DNA because that sort of thing is done everyday.
Vagrant0
My understanding is that certain chemicals such as ammonia or bleach causes the blood cells to rupture or degrade spoiling the generic data that might be gained from that sample. I would however point out that for various reasons TV shows like CSI tend to use incomplete science on purpose for plot, and so that people who get the notions to do violent acts and then cover up evidence can't do so well at fooling real detectives unless they have had special training.
