Oblivion & NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

Hi! I've upgraded my computer and I didn't see any problems with other games, but in Oblivion I have this:

Also I have 2 items in options not active:

- Shadows on grass

- Shadow Filtering

I've figured out that grey screen is the result of HDR turned on. When I turn it off or set it to Bloom it's ok.

Is there a way to enable HDR ? Or is it unsupported by GTX 550 Ti at all ?

The screenshot you show is the normal one you get when starting a new game. It's not very intuitive, but you must click on the 'Enter Character Name' and actually type in a name for your character before it will allow you to continue.

Oblivion supports EITHER HDR OR Bloom but not both.

When you change your video card you must regenerate the Oblivion.ini file - because it identifies your video card to the game. To do this just start using the DVD and it will automatically try to id your video card - and fail - meaning you will have to select the screen resolution.

OR go into the folder yourself - probably in the Users\yourusername\my documents\my games \Oblivion folder and delete the old Oblivion.ini And NOT the game folder. It will automatically regen a new Oblivion.ini using your new Video card - and fail to identify it as that part of the game has not been upgraded to recognize any new video cards since 2006 - only means you will need to manually select the resolution.

1. That screenshot is not my. I've searched for an answer on different sites and I saw same topic from other guy, and I just took it to make it faster. I have this grey screen not just at starting of a new game. And I didn't even have such grey screen on new game start. Never.

2. I am not new to Oblivion :) I know about HDR and Bloom and that Oblivion can support only one of them at one time.

3. After changing my card I deleted all files in My Games\Oblivion folder and reinstalled Oblivion. So there is no any link to my old video card.

Do you mean AA: anti aliasing? HDR doesn't support AA and I know about that. It is turned off.

In your computer upgrade did you replace the hard drive or the Windows operating system?

If Oblivion was ever on that hard drive, and the OS was not changed then it leaves behind entries in the Windows Registry that are not removed when you just delete the folders or even if you actually use the uninstaller on the DVD. Those entries can come back and byte you if they are not cleaned out.

All of this is covered in my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure.

Here is a link to my complete uninstall/reinstall procedure located in the WIKI section of the Nexus

http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Oblivion_reinstall_procedure

It allows you to preserve any saves and mods, or remove them completely - your choice.

to HeyYou:

I've tried those nVidia fixes and it didn't help me.

After computer upgrade I've completely reinstalled OS with formatting of the system partition. So there are no files left from old system. Now I am using Win7 64-bit.

That should have taken care of the Registry.

What resolution are you using? It's usually best to use the native resolution of the monitor and not a higher one.

Are you using any compatibility mode?

BTW, I have been using Win7 x64 since it came out - Oblivion installed right out of the box (collectors edition) with no problems. Not using any compatibility mode. My video card is an Nvidia 260GTX

Game is installed to C:\Games\Oblivion

Screen resolution is the same as it was before computer update - 1280x1024. And of course, I don't use any compatibility modes. It's not need at all, the game is running very well in Win7. For installation I use same path as it was before, I have special folder for games, never install them on system partition.

I am sure the problem is in the hardware. I've heard that latest nvidia cards have some troubles with HDR, may be it's with my vcard too... I can play in Oblivion, no problems, if I use Bloom. I just wanted to use HDR, hoped that somebody knows the solution. Then I will just use OBGE with the bunch of shaders...
