200 years on and technology is still the same

Agreed on the observation on the regression of Elder Scrolls. At the rate things are going in Tamriel knowledge will regress to the stone age after Skyrim. It makes me wish the dwemer or a successor race were brought into play to reintroduce some innovation into the Elder Scrolls world. With the way things have progressed, the current dirt dwellers in Skyrim seem to be lucky if they still can read.

All this talk about magical guns is stupid... because they already exist, but their called staffs instead... and for ammo we have souls... plus I also would like to see some tech advancement maybe some better irrigation techniques and maybe people actual understanding and building on the things the dwemer created for day to day stuff... When the Roman empire fell, technology and science declined and the world remained in a hiatus for about 600 years. Until the crusades that is, when they had contact with the much more advanced islamic world. And it was still swords and catapults till the late 14th century. So, a world not advancing for a few hundred years isn't something to behold. It happened to us. Why shouldn't it happen in a fantasy setting?

The last 500 years in our world has seen massive technological advancement, but what of the hundreds of thousands of years of human civilised history prior to that?

Urban civilization is only ~5000 years old. Agriculture 10,000.

The 'rule' seems to be that once populations reach certain densities technological progress is 'inevitable'. You can argue over cause and effect according to your political leanings... undoubtedly in reality it's more complex than that.

We humans have a habit of extrapolating the status-quo into the deep past or elevating it to some kind of cosmic 'natural order'. But in reality the 'classical periods' into which we categories history... none of them really lasted very long. The soviet union lasted 80 years, the ancient judaic kingdoms fell apart in less than a generation, laissez faire capitalism little more than that etc etc.
