Arcelas
So I'm looking at FINALLY building a new gaming PC. I have one minor problem: I am broke. I mean broke. I mean as in I stole a Twinkie from a homeless guy broke.that being said, I did put together the "Homeless Guy's Gaming PC", on Newegg's wishlist feature. I wanted to run the build past you all here. Here we go! Stormcrown
What is your MAX budget? Going with AMD would be a more cost effective route, although sandy bridge CPU's are unrivaled. You should save money and put most of your budget into a graphics card.
Vecna6667
You can get a good gaming rig for under $700 if you do the research. This article by Gordon Ung at MaximumPC has him making one for $667 though the prices on a few of those parts have dropped. I believe you can now buy a Radeon HD 6870 from XFX for just a little bit more than the cost of the Radeon HD 6790 had cost at the time of the article. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/how_build_kick-ass_gaming_rig_under_700
Arcelas
As I work for Best Buy, a good share of my components I can get at a discount, which will help either with lowering my cost or upgrading my build.
Illiad86
How much of a discount do you get for working there? I was just checking their prices and they charge at least $50-100 more than newegg for graphics cards. Don't think you would get much of a deal even with a discount. RAM isn't very cheap at all either...$35 for 4GB of DDR3 1333. You can get 8GB of 1600MHz for that price on newegg...with heat spreaders and it's not such an "off-brand". Nice little setup there, but I would spend more on a graphics card. A GT 440 is a pretty slow card. If you're broke, go for an AMD setup. The motherboards and CPUs are much cheaper...and all you lose is a bit of performance. Edited October 5, 2011 by Illiad86

Arcelas
thanks for all the advice guys. as for my discount, I pay 5% over cost for anything in the store. so some things are a good deal, and others really aren't.
