dangle
I am a fan of the older games; they are cheaper and usually run on my computer :)The following are unreal games and i am petitioning to have it law to have these games released on every new computer: Baldurs Gate II Shadows of Amn (with the Throne of Bhaal expansion) is a must! Nearly ten years old, but still widely considered to be in the top ten games of all time!Fallout (not the most challenging though)Diablo2 had many many hours of fun. The following are great games, but the replay value is only as good as watching the simpsons or something. Always great, but the game is the same every time: TES Adventures: RedguardSam 'n' MaxFull ThrottleMonkey Island series I also love the ultima series (underworld, oh yeah); but that series is usually of selective tastes
Vagrant0
I'm gonna have to take Diablo 2 off my list now that I think about it. Without online play, the game kinda gets boring real fast, and you miss out on most of the replay value since you're stuck with solo viable builds, can't trade/transfer gear between characters, and don't have anyone you can pwn when there is nothing else to do. As for fallout, I tried it, didn't really see what the big deal was. Not sure if it was just the graphics, or the controls. I might have also just been limited modding, and lack of cheats... Can't quite remember.
WrathOfDeadguy
A few of my picks from the PC Gaming Library of Dan: System Shock 2- which is another genre-bender which blends aspects of shooter and RPG in a similar fashion to TES (except that SS2 is closer to an FPS while TES is closer to RPG). SS2 also has Co-Op via online play for up to 4 people. Omikron: The Nomad Soul- a very good 3D adventure title with a smattering of action bits. Controls are a bit awkward, but worth dealing with. Homeworld- The first RTS to feature fully 3D ships and environments. Loads of replayability; it took the game's community more than five years to figure out all the little mission quirks and tactics. Both sequels are worth checking out, too, though I'm still convinced that the first was the best. Shadowgrounds- a recent indie game designed as a top-down shooter, blending old-school gameplay with some very cool effects. Nexus: The Jupiter Incident- A Real-Time Tactical game focusing on large spaceships blowing the snot out of each other. Steep learning curve and some truly demonic missions towards the end, but worth playing. Morrowind- I think I'd have to kill myself out of shame if I didn't say it, painfully obvious though it is. Freelancer- A relatively relaxed sandbox-style space-shooter/pseudo-RPG which features dozens of systems and hundreds of locations. Realism need not apply. Starsiege: Tribes- IMHO the best damned multiplayer FPS that ever existed. Steep learning curve, but an absolute blast to play. IIRC, it's still available as a free download. Prey- Plays mostly like any FPS out there, but the atmosphere is like nothing else. Notable for some very cool organic weapons, out-of-body experiences, and mind-warping level design. The Longest Journey- An adventure game with a great story, fantastic character depth, and some very odd puzzles. Think like MacGuyver. I think I missed a few genres in there, but if you have eclectic tastes like me then you'll find at least a couple keepers in there. Any of the above can be had for under $20, too. System Shock 2 and Omikron might give newer systems some trouble- especially System Shock 2, which requires some tweaking to even be able to run at all on dual-core/duel-processor systems, but both are well worth any trouble they might give you. *edit- most of the above games have a strong singleplayer component; some are singleplayer exclusive. Only Starsiege: Tribes is multiplayer-exclusive, but due to the age of the game (1998) it isn't as likely to eat you if you've got a slow connection. Grumman
System Shock 2: If your computer can play it, then you should definitely play this FPS/RPG. It is great for inspiring paranoia, of the "huddle in a corner with a gun aimed at the door while you work out what to do next" kind. Play it at night, with the sound turned up. There was a mod released which replaces all the models, so you don't have to put up with the mediocre humanoid meshes. Half Life 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2: Portal finally persuaded me to try a Steam-based game. Half Life 2 and the rest of the Orange Box are well worth playing, in my opinion. X3: A single-player spaceship game. Unlike Freelancer you are not limited to a single small ship: you can build stations or entire fleets of capital ships, traders and fighter escorts. Like Oblivion, the core game has some unfortunate flaws, but with the right modding it is great fun to play. For example, the first thing I did was mod the game to double to quadruple the top speeds of all the ships. Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries: Good fun at LANs, for answering questions like "What will happen if I load a hundred-ton assualt mech entirely with anti-mech shotguns?" Dark0ne
If you're looking for a golden oldie then try out X-Com: Apocalypse, my favourite game of all time.

ninja_lord666
Overlord is a great game. It's like Pikmin except not for gay losers. There's also Psychonauts. Despite it's relatively poor graphics, it's one of the best games I've played in awhile. I can't forget to mention the entire Forgotten Realms series. All of those games are great. Battle for Middle-Earth 1 & 2 + Rise of the Witch-King are great Middle-Earth based strategy games. Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader is a rather...unique rpg. It can get repetitive after a while, but it's still pretty good. The Stronghold games are also good strategy games.
