Can't dismiss companions

So, sorry to comment on such an old thread, I know that's a forum etiquette thing. But I have a related problem that hasn't been addressed yet.

I was using AFT, then I got a mod that edited the followers script file, and I was having the same problem. I did my research and I fixed it, but I'm still having this problem with Dogmeat. All the human (and synth, and supermutant) followers work normally, but I still can't dismiss Dogmeat. I think I know why. I decided pretty much the only thing I like about AFT is that it lets you take your lovely canine pal along with any of the other companions. So I found a mod that did only that (Everyone's Best Friend) and replaced AFT with it. So I'm using the vanilla system, only my game is still a little screwed up in that it's pretending Dogmeat isn't my follower except when I go to talk to him.

I'm sure I could fix this by deactivating Everyone's Best Friend and then loading my game. That would probably force some kind of update, but if there's an easier way, I'd love to hear it. (Edit: Tried this, didn't work.)

1. Does AFT have an uninstall feature, either by holotape or MCM? If it does did you do that first?

2. Did you clean your save after disabling AFT? You probably have cruft left over in your saved game that needs to be cleaned out.

Any mod that changes base game behavior tends to screw up everything if you uninstall it. What I'd do, I'd reinstall AFT, check to see if it has an uninstall feature. If so then run it. Save your game, log out, disable AFT. Log in, save your game again. Then clean that save using Fallrim tools. Log in using the cleaned save, check Dogmeat. If he's working you can turn on Everyone's Best Friend, which doesn't screw with base mechanics, just restores a setting that was supposed to be in there to begin with (basically it flips a switch).

That sounds promising. I'll do that and get back to you.

That did the trick! I disabled Everyone's Best Friend, enabled AFT, and then loaded the game. At first I wasn't able to even talk to Dogmeat, which was alarming. AFT master control also didn't recognize that he was there at all, but when I went into workshop mode, I could highlight him. After exiting workshop mode, I tried dismissing him from dialogue, which didn't work. I tried dismissing him from AFT master control, and that didn't work either, but I told AFT to "unmanage" him, and that seemed to work. Then I told AFT to uninstall, exited to main menu, disabled AFT, enabled Everyone's Best Friend, and loaded the game. I can recruit and dismiss him as normal now. I haven't tested whether I can use him with a human follower, but if that doesn't work, it'd be a separate issue. Thanks!

Glad that fixed things. I figures something as complicated as AFT would have an uninstall function.

I'd still clean your save to make sure any bits left over from AFT are fully removed.
