Speedrun Challenge

For all the talk about Bethesda’s upcoming open-world RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim being a big game that can consume a huge chunk of a player’s time, there are two players that can finish it in just over two hours. And one of them even won a pie for the accomplishment.

Bethesda tester Sam Bernstein and developer Jeff Browne went head-to-head in the latest in a studio tradition: a speedrun contest as the game is just about done. A speedrun is basically a sprint through a level or an entire game in an effort to record the fastest time possible and perhaps even break a record. In Skyrim‘s case, that race would take the two testers through all of the game’s main quests and nothing else, with no cheats allowed. As members of the development team, Sam and Jeff know the game inside-out and know every last trick to efficiently speed through the game.

The winner was to receive a trophy and a “pie of their choice from [producer] Todd Howard.” In fact, the Sam vs Jeff matchup is well-known among Bethesda staff, as Sam edged out Jeff to win the pie at the end of the Fallout 3 development process.

In this year’s contest, the first to finish the game was Jeff with a time of 2:16:30. Yes, that’s two hours, for this huge game. (Amazingly, Fallout 3 and Oblivion were done in about 1 hour and 15 minutes!)

However, that didn’t mean Jeff won. Sam had had to roll back a save game (with the judges’ permission) which put him a few minutes behind. When he did finish the game, his recorded completion time was 2:16:10 – all of twenty seconds faster than Jeff.

For gamers concerned that Skyrim might be short, fear not, we game has all the depth of its predecessors (if not more).

Sam will be celebrating his victory with a pumpkin pie.

^^^my first post

I didn't think there was anything to fear anyway, after all it was just the main quest, as well as a speedrun, so they obviously wouldn't have taken their time to take in the world around them.

Especially considering all the side quests and factions, as well as just the little things we'll end up doing.

I'm not worried Skyrim will be short at all.

Im not worried about the length, oblivion was plenty long enough and they did a speedrun through that in 1:15. So judging by this skyrim is longer than oblivion

This ^^

Skyrim also took an hour longer than Fallout 3 too. This is just focusing on the main quest as well. I know personally I will be on the main quest and get distracted by other things and wander off for a bit doing my own thing. These players have also been testing the game for a while from what Ive heard, so they will know the main quest inside out by now.

I actually think its a very clever thing for Bethesda to do. It gives them an idea of how long their main quest is in comparison to other games, and lets them see that even rushed through as fast as possible. There is still more gameplay in their mainquest than the whole of other big titles, such as Half Life 2 which was about an hour for the whole game.

I bet they couldnt complete it that fast if it was their first playthrough. Dont worry about it

Oh yeah i`m not worried at all that it will be short or nothing it just came as a little shock to me

but like in oblivion if you really play the game you can end up playing it for weeks, maybe even months in one playthrough, these guys apparently just fast traveled to the quest locations, used the best gear they had and just ran through the dungeons that didnt require kills. My theory atleast.

It's just a developers competition. They already know every little trick in the book because they helped create it. It doesn't mean its going to be easy or unsatisfying for the masses to the contrary it looks to a have a bit more to it than Oblivion and Morrowind.

I remember watching a tod Howard interview talking about the fo3 speedrun and he was saying that they would loose time if they even accidentally rubbed up against a wall so that tells u that they probably ran past trash monsters didnt loot there kill didn't even kill every enemy that attacked them didn't listen to the quest dialogue etc
