Building a computer for the first time

Recommended Posts

Alright. I think I have most of this figured out, though I'm still uncertain on a few things.

Case: CoolerMaster Elite http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119204 $30ish

DVD Drive: Still not sure

PSU: Depends on SLI but 3 Ive looked at are

Corsair 700w ($100ish) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139024

Corsair 800w (130ish) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139025

hec Zephyr MX 750 ($70) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817339002

RAM: Havent looked yet, will be easy to decide. Probably the 8gb Vengence I've seen

GPU: GeForce 560 ($200ish) or GeForce 570 (300ish)

Mobo: ASUS P8P67 DELUXE for SLI mosty ($215) http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8P67_DELUXE/#specifications

or ASUS P8P67 PRO ($150ish) http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8P67_PRO/#specifications

CPU: Intel core i7 2600k ($315ish) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115070

HDD: Still not reall certain...but here is one I've looked at.

Western Digital Caviar Black ($80ish) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533

CPU cooler: haven't looked yet

So far everything comes out to be anything between ($875-$1050) minus the stuff I haven't included yet of course. So far I am very satisfied! This looks like some great hardware and the price ranges compared to what Ive seen prebuilt in the store kick ***

Anyways, any suggestions or further advice on the things I have here?

you dont need to pay 200+ for a mobo. save yourself some money

here is a DVD Drive

if your willing to pay $100 for a PSU, here is a very good one. 80+ Gold, modular, plenty of wattage, good brand

and lastly, unless you wanna do video editing and create mods and whatnot, save yourself $100 and get the i5-2500k

Really? I didn't realize that. I figured if I invest a little more in an SLI capable mobo now I'd save a little money in the future when i want to upgrade video cards.

when you plan to upgrade your video card

its not likely that your current variation will still be on the market

so its gonna be cheeeeeper to buy any new super card

than trying to match your old card.

but then again

it'll be more likely that at that time you will be more interested in a complete system overhaul/new computer

so consider your current requirements instead of blowing money on "future proofing" your wallet.

also consider that most decent motherboards today come with either SLI or crossfire built into the design -- so just ignore this issue when considering your actual requirements.

BTW the active definition of "future proofing" --> spending your money now so you don't have it in the future.
