Maya Autodesk and Oblivion

Hello everyone, glad to see you! I just have a couple of quick questions and I'll be out of your hair =)

So recently I became a student in modeling, and while I'm still an amateur, I have the know-how to at the very least edit things.

I began modeling with Maya and found it's interface very intuitive. However, it appears as though there are some problems with editing Oblivion .nif files.

This problem mainly lies with an unpacked NIF. I use Nifskope to export the OBJ I want from the NIF, and then I pull them into Maya. After editing the objects, I throw them back into Nifskope and over-write the NiTriShapeData. In Oblivion, however... they're invisible, particularly when editing avatar models.

Is there some way that I can use Maya to work with NIFs directly? Any ideas on what the problems might be right now? Tips? Suggestions? I'm open to any help I can get.

But to answer your question,

In order to directly edit *.NIF files in a 3D package it needs to have support for the *.NIF file extension. Since neither 3dsMax nor Maya have native support for the *.NIF files, you'll need to locate and install a plugin called NIFTOOLS.

However, before attempting to install niftools, you need to make sure you have the correct version. The latest versions of 3DSmax and Maya are unable to use NIFTOOLS because the niftools plugin has to be recompiled/updated for each new version of the software, and there basically isn't much (if any) support for these tools anymore. You'll need to have older versions of the software you're using if you want to run Niftools.

Maya isn't nearly as popular as 3DSmax, so I have no idea if Niftools works with any version of Maya later than 2009. If you use 3dsMax, there is support for niftools up to 2011.

Thanks so much for your reply Favored. To answer your question, my modeling is purely a self-taught experience, so using the latest Maya was by choice. I was afraid that I may have to downgrade to use Niftools, and apparently I will.

It's really a shame, since Maya 2012 has raised the standards of 3D editing to new heights. If I could program I'd certainly work on updating Niftools to the task, but alas I have no such ability.

In any case, thank you for the time you've taken to answer my questions! If anyone else has some more tips, hints or tricks that might be helpful, I'd love to hear them as well. <3

Use Blender 2.49b portable with NIFScripts to import and export your model.
