alfaz62
Hey im new to the forums here, and to modding fallout:newvegas as well, but not new to modding. ive modded other games (not from bethesda or anything) and have a basic knowledge of how to mod. that said i have no idea how to mod New Vegas. i know u have to use the GECK but have no idea what the hell im doing. ive read tutorials at whatnot but its all just confusing for me. i know how to change the statistics for a certain weapon in a mod but thats as far as my knowledge goes. i know im terrible at this modding b/c i dont know how every picture ive seen of a FOMM always has authors and s*** and mine just says default and my game crashes at least 4 times everytime i play fallout but im learning. if i can get at least a little knowledge of how modding works in general (especially the GECK) then id be really thankful. thanks
KainSpice
I'm on the same boat as you, the GECK is a very versatile tool, but lacks any official documentation that is sufficient enough in terms of explaining individual functionalities to go along with it. If anyone knows of a good guide to get someone familiarized with the majority of the GECK's functions and such, please let us know, I can't seem to find one other than the official one. Thank you. LordGawaine
This: http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Main_Page and Google are your friends... I've been working on a rather large mod myself (first time user) and I've had to Google a lot (especially when it came to scripting to know commands, etc). Other than that, it's been trial and error. Stratomunchkin
The GECK wiki really only offers the bare bones in so far as what does which kind of function, and very seldomly does it offer examples of a How To that can be understood by noobs like me. That's true especially in the case of scripting. I mean, it's nice to place the syntax there, as for example in the KillActor functionActor.KillActor Killer:ref DismemberLimb:int CauseOfDeath:intbut if you're new to scripting anyway they could just as well have written down a recipe for Chicken Massala in Hindi. For me to understand the intricacies, I need examples. I've been making baby steps so far, mostly through the ample use of Youtube and Google and some nice hints on this forum. Other than that? Pure trial and error (and crashes of the GECK).

Suppose I'll google and perform trial and error like everyone else. Wish someone along the line had thought of making a full-fledged guide. Ah well. Ah well. That would've been nice, since the GECK's basically an evolution of the Oblivion/TES construction sets. There's at least enough background to warrant a full-fledged guide written for the lowest common denominator. But then, it's always easier to demand something than to actually be the one doing the work, so I'll be patient and glad that there's at least some info I can understand. LordGawaine
I realize that the WIKI is lacking... but from looking at one part of it then comparing with another part I've been able to do a fair bit so far... For starting your script: http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Begin For some practice scripting, questing, dialoguing: http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Quest_and_Dialogue_Tutorial Functions: http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Category:Functions And then there's looking at other scripts from the game... There are also tutorials on doing other things out there, but you do need to look for them.

Jeux
Like most other large applications you download, I can honestly just say its plain trial and error. Practice. Really, just mess with it. Create a couple of practice interiors, then populate, clutter, and navmesh them. Then graduate to worldspaces and the climate/weather/LOD/etc. that comes with it. Then, learn about all the possible entries for things like factions, NPCs, items, weapons, static and non-static objects, how to reference objects....trial and error. I'm telling you, if you take about a week or two to just simply mess with the GECK, you'll understand every aspect of it, as well as it's faults and ways to work around them. KainSpice
@LordGawaineThank you oh so very much for the scripting links. @alfaz62I'm not sure if you could port FO3 assets to F:NV. Best to ask around first.
