Honest question for authors.

First off, yeah, I'm a newb author. Nothing spectacular.

I'm learning and trying. (have to start somewhere)

I do have a couple mods up though.

Now for my question, which I would like the MA to answer.

Q: Would you mind if someone uploaded your mod PRIVATELY to bethsite.

For their own use. That option IS available. (I just double checked with my mod. private/public)

You don't have to give explanations if you don't want, but I'm rather curious how authors feel.

Me, I would have no problems with that. No real difference between that, and downloading from here.

Mind you, if it doesn't work, causes your console to explode and a gooey mess, well, don't cry to me,

start mopping up.

My thought on this is that I don't see much difference between doing that and downloading it from the Nexus. There's just an intermediate filter step to get from Nexus to the console. As long as you never, ever distribute it to anyone else, I can't see it as stealing the mod, and I'm pretty picky about that. Just remember, the stupid thing defaults to public. No going "oops, I forgot". Be sure to click Private.

That said, I wouldn't recommend doing it. In many cases, the reason a mod hasn't been ported over yet by the author is that there are issues he or she is trying to resolve that are causing it to work incorrectly or not work at all on the console. So if it breaks your game, deal with the consequences, revert to an earlier save, and move on. No trying to get the author to fix it for you, no posting that it's not working, no sharing it with a friend to see if they can get it working.

Also, private or not, one you authored or not, uploading any mods that violate the Bethesda ToS is a bad idea, so don't do it.

If you do privately upload a mod for personal use only, though, at least have the courtesy to toss an Endorse or even a Donation in the author's direction here at the Nexus.

I would mind. Especially if I had explicitly stated that my mod is not to be uploaded anywhere else. And, like Gruffydd pointed out, If the person who downloads the mod from here, has the mod for their own use already, why do they need to upload it onto another website once they already have it? It is unnecessary labor to add it to another site, especially through the CK-to-methesda.net system, and makes you wonder what is their true purpose/motive for having it there at all. If the answer is so that they may play it on their console, then it goes back to my first point - If I said no to it being uploaded somewhere else, then no means no.

As long as you endorsed my mod before uploading it you your private whatever, I wouldn't care...

But my mod will be available by me for all platforms, so there won't be any reason to steal something I give freely to everyone.

I honestly just want to have people to endorse my mod and support what I am doing... It isn't like I care about internet fame or anything like that, because that is all silly to me... But I want to either start working on my own videogame titles or get a job with a AAA studio. I work on stuff an release it for free to prove that I am more that just talk. As long as people are showing they like what I do, I will continue doing it. If not, then maybe I should stick to my day job.

These are the worst thing that could have happen

- download mod and privately use it without permission on console

- permanently break their save file or console

- send death threats to the modder or blame the modder

- I'm sure there is no need for permissions to use on console any downloaded mod.

- And again, I'm sure mod can't break console in no way.

@skubblebubble

You don't need to ask, you can do anything with downloaded mods as long it's only you. Edit it or port to desired console. Just do not publish it without permissions.

Beth has ZERO rights providing this service. If it's on Beth.net servers, it ain't private, but a COMMERCIAL use of the mod (because by providing this service, Zenimax benefits commercially- which in law is all that matters).

If someone comes to the nexus, downloads a mod, tweaks it, reverse engineers it, and uses it for their OWN personal use- it would be INSANE for any modder to have an opinion about this either way. What you don't KNOW and don't CONTROL, you shouldn't even think about- by definition.

But Beth encouraging unauthorised mod use, even for a 'pretend' 'private' use is UTTERLY UNACCEPTABLE - and designed by very well paid lawyers to be the thin end of the wedge. The dodgy online music services that encouraged users to upload their 'own' music to 'private' servers for their own 'private' online use were all sued into oblivion in US courts.

ANY unauthorised mod on Beth servers, accesible under ANY circumstance, is totally ILLEGAL.

Again folks, I don't HAVE a console. Never will. Ever. Never. Hate the things.

This is about if SOMEONE were to do it privately for their own use.

(btw, any smart console player would be doing exactly this, and keeping their mouth shut.

Then again, please read the key words in the above sentence..
