Klotzco
I've been wondering if Bethesda has given an ideal number of skills in which one should specialize in. I've been looking around and people have been listing 6 skills for their build. I know if you specialize in few skills you will most likely lever faster, but I would just like to hear everyone's opinion on whats the ideal number of skills. Razthemystic
Probably 4-6 is a good choice. At least 4-6 to put perks in. You can technically get everything to 100 and be awesome, but the 4-6 skills with perks will be awesomer.
Lowk
Six is pretty reasonable; more than that would probably only let you max a few skills' perk trees. If you're mixing and matching from some lower-requirement perks, though, more could totally work. Trees range from about 8 to 15 points to max. My first character will have six skills, but that's really just coincidence based on what I picked for him. There isn't really a wrong way to do it!

InuyashaFE
Eventually through one of my playthroughs, I'm gonna attempt to withhold all my perks until I max out, then see how many perks I can get without need to get the prerequisite perk, unless they all need prerequisite perks, in which case, I'm boned.
justwannaddl
I'll probably just focus on as few skills as possible and choose perks however I feel like. Worse comes to worse, I'll just use console commands if my build turns out to be total crap. Thank goodness for PC gaming.
RejectedCamel
Well I'll be going for heavy armour, destruction magic, alchemy, sneaking, security and maaaaaaybe alchemy. It's probably best to focus on the least possible to maximise everything. Remember, Skyrim does have enemies that will be a lot more powerful than you, so it's probably best to be an expert in some skills, than okay in all. erikface
I've personally been sticking to seven skills with the character builds I have in mind. There are some skills I just don't plan on giving many perks to, namely, lockpicking.

RejectedCamel
I dare anyone to make a Pure Thief....oh wait....what will you attack with?By definition, a thief technically doesn't attack anyone. http://www.thenexusforums.com/public/style_emoticons/dark/psyduck.gif ... buuuuut I guess you can just attack with daggers if you *really* want to play as a thief. Although I imagine most of the time you'd be avoiding combat anyway.
