someONEgood
Initially, I was going to buy Skyrim retail even though I prefer steam, due to the issues people had with modding a steam version of Oblivion. But with the announcement of Skyrim using Steamworks, I was curious if it would even make a difference now? What version will you be buying, and do you think the steam version will be moddable? I'm certain the Steam version will be moddable. Valve is pretty supportive of modding for games where the developers of that game also support modding. There were a few hiccups with OBSE in the Steam version of Oblivion, but Valve actually helped resolve those at the time. As for differences between Steam and disc-based versions, I think they may be minimal to none, but I guess we'll see when we have copies of the game. Personally, I ordered on Steam. I didn't know they'd ironed out the oblivion modding on steam. I'd just had a buddy who complained about never getting it to work. It worked fine for me but I had retail. This is good news. I'll probably get it on Steam then. Thank you for the quick reply! :)
JimboUK
They're both the Steam version, the DVD just gets you a disk, box and a map.

To play any legitimate PC version of Skyrim, you have to register your key at Steam and have them unlock/unencrypted it. I was worried about mods and the steam version but I think I will buy it from stream now.
samogen
I don’t believe whether or not the game is or isn’t encrypted by Steam is the real question, it may be, and if it is that’s fine. However I think what most people are concerned with is whether or not all of the files are going to be hidden in some god forsaken sub SUB folder in the crap files that is the Steam folder, or will we all be able to install the files wherever we choose for ease of modding. I for one don’t care as long as I don’t have to jump through hundreds of hoops just to install a simple mod. It may just be me and if it is that’s fine too. tylitalo
Opening three extra folders is a major series of hoops to installing a mod? :ohdear: To answer OP's question, there is no difference. They'll both install to the same place and behave exactly the same.
chaosforge
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data that's where they are, just like with New Vegas. Modding will be no more of an issue with Skyrim than with NV :) hope that helps
xaliqen
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, it's usually a good idea to move your Steam install path to C:\Games\Steam rather than C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\ Programs placed in the program folder can experience interference due to UAC in recent versions of Windows, and this crops up especially if you're running mods. See this helpful Steam support page for more information on moving your Steam install. Edited November 10, 2011 by xaliqen
