Skyrim complete PC crashes

Reporting back from yesterday. I installed 32bit XP SP3 on a spare disk, fully patched it, installed a fresh Steam client, redownloaded Skyrim, started the game, 5 minutes, bang! Blackscreen, audio loop, hard reset required. No other game does this on my box.

So it ain't Windows 7, or 64 bits. I'll check out what Threemoons posted next.

Asus P5N-D

8GB G.Skill PC2

HIS Radeon HD 6870

Psy,

Let me know if my solution works for you. I started to get hard crashes with other Steam games before I started doing the selective boot; now it's been stable all week.

Oy, sorry to hear that! It may be a combo of things--heating issue, etc. on top of other issues.

Please keep us posted.

EDIT: Even though the instructions say to enable the Steam agent in Vista and Windows 7, I checked my settings and realized that in fact I had them turned off. I still launched Skyrim via the Steam client though with no problem. Maybe this is part of the solution?

Pleased to report back that my Skyrim has been stable this evening since doing the Selective Startup with all non-MS services disabled, described above by Threemoons. Knock on wood, but before I couldn't make it 5 minutes out of the wreck of the Skinny Horker, couldn't make it to Dawnstar, without it crashing out. A definite improvement that I hope will last. Cheers to everyone and many thanks to Threemoons for that post.

EDIT: I did get a BLUESCREEN, not black, a few hours after posting, but a marked improvement in stability. Will update.

got the same problem. running win7 32bit though so i don't think that the problem lies there. also is never crashed in any dungeons before only on the main map (outside).

got a hd 6870 with 11.9 catalyst

hope there is a fix for this soon .. don't like to hard reset my pc ^

well i have 32 bit windows but my computer (laptop) after 20 to 15 mins of gameplay just fades to dark, and i need to reboot my pc manualy yesterday i played for 3 hours

and didnt chrash but i was playing on the lowest settings possible.also i set my sound to 24bit,44100 as it said to stop chrashes.if you need my specs il post them.

i've occasionally had the "takes five minutes to load up" thing, but never this freeze up and crash if i get a ctd, thats just what it is. if it was just you, i'd say maybe a problem with your cpu maybe not up to task or damaged in some way. all the ones who have this should post their specs maybe there is some commonality to be discovered.

Hi everyone!

I recently received Skyrim as a gift from the Steam summer sale. Sadly, I have the same problem as most of you: screen turns off, sound freezes, then a complete reboot of the computer a few seconds later. It doesn't matter where I am or what quest I'm on, it always happens 1-5 minutes from starting the game up. I also notice it happens more when I'm in the open world as opposed to mines, houses, etc. I was able to play for 3 hours the other night by underclocking, using window mode, and lowering my graphics to medium, and then started acting up again the next day. I've tried the Steam solution posted on the last page with no results and have also e-mailed Bethesda. Also, it's nothing to do with overheating on my end; everything is 50C when running games during "intense" graphics loading.

My specs: AMD Phenom II X4 970 Processor, 3.5 GHz, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 6870, Windows 7 64bit

This really sucks and I'm sorry I can't offer any solutions. Has Bethesda even said if they're going to fix this? It doesn't seem like good business to let this issue continue and have its users waste $30-60 on an unplayable game.
