JimboUK
Steam is also a retailer, a majority of retailers store customers data, it's why I don't need to enter my card number when I do the weekly shop.
tnu
Your overreacting. There is nothing in Steam stopping you from using mods. Furthere you are not a "slave". Think before you speak. You are not being forced to buy or play the game. You must have had a REALLY bad experience with Steam in order to be this batshit irrational. Besides Skyrim DOES use the online features for patches, DLCs, and less importantly achievements.
zappa45
I can download my own patches thanks, been doing it for years without steam being involved works great for me... and yes I have had some really batsh.t bad experiences with steam. I may be over reacting as you put it but I have supported this platform for years and I have produced mods for this game for everyone to enjoy and I resent being forced to use steam to play my game or any game against my will when I have paid for the game. If it's an mmo or an online game then fine but on an out of the box game with no online content ...no thanks. never again...never again. But seriously just want to add again that I'm not angry with the players or modders out there it's just the principle and the freedom of the community that I am bemoaning here. Now if the previous gentleman was right and you can back up the files to disk and use them whenever you want without steam then I'm all good. Also I don't need achievements, I can keep track of where i am thanks Edited November 12, 2011 by zappa45

I can understand activating my game from the producers website. I feel the producers (Bethesda or who ever) should be responsible for any updating or extras and you should go to them, not a third party. I paid $60 for this game and I don't appreciate having to set up an account with Steam in order to activate or install the game, that's what I bought the DVD for. For those who like Steam or who ever else, great, go for it. But I want the option not to have to do this and install directly from the DVD.
FoolyFooly
What, exactly, is your problem here. Steam does not impede modding at all so I don't see what you're whining about. Everything else, fine, thats your own problems to deal with and if you don't like Steam thats your business. The idea that it's a threat to modding was dismissed months ago. There's no Steam drm ecryption on the executeable so script extenders work fine, and the files are all in the same place.

You mean that you actually managed to miss all the new threads with people not even being able to run the game at all with steam? Seriously? xaliqen
Steam's never been an issue with my modding. If there've been a few hiccups, I'm able to find a solution pretty easily. Just be sure to disable the steam cloud option, since this may interfere with the game. I'm kind of surprised at all of the hate for Steam. As someone who uses it on a daily basis and has compared it to the competition, Steam does a good job in my estimation. I'm guessing most of you who have such a deep hatred for Steam haven't used it very much.

I was a steam hater too until I started using it a lot then it grew on me and I buy games all the time from them. Give it a try you might like it. On the other hand Origin is waaay worse. I was so pissed when I got BF3.
FoolyFooly
You mean that you actually managed to miss all the new threads with people not even being able to run the game at all with steam? Seriously? Steam dosen't *do* anything to the game, it's just a frontend. So unless you mean people who have poor Internet, it's problems with Skyrim, not with Steam. Raiden8
To address these claims, in order of appearance: -Should I, in many years, wish to play one of these games and for some reason not be able to access steam or my own personal back-ups. there are other, less legal means of obtaining old software. I wouldn't feel to bad about it if it really was that outdated and I payed for it already.this gave me a chuckle "i acknowledge your point - but i wont say so & i will also will pirate the game later on if i lose the ability to use steam" crackup!
