Skyrim Fix random crash to desktop no error

I recently started having this CTD problem too...

Thing is, I have had Skyrim since it was released. Not a single problem at all until about a week ago, when it just CTD's sometimes when I try to go to Whiterun, sometimes in the wilderness, and whenever I try to go into a main story line area, such as Ustengrav. I have quite a few mods that I use, but I have had these mods on for months without a single problem. It was just last week when I started to properly play Skyrim again that it has started crashing.

I have tried every fix in this thread, and some others I found, but none of them has worked. For me, the crashes seem focused on Whiterun and any story line related dungeon. It also happens with any old saves or new saves that are made. I really don't understand why it is just happening to me now, and I am not really sure how to solve it. I honestly do not understand why it has started crashing out of the blue when I have been running these mods for so long.

I can happily play by just avoiding Whiterun and doing side quests, but this means I cannot do the story line, which is a major problem. The only fix that I havn't tried is a complete clean install, which I am hesitant to do because I am very near my download limit (got limited broadband, unfortunately) and won't be able to download the 4GB update or whatever it is after the install from disk.

I've been having the same issues with the CTD. But mine is whenever I try to either continue or load a saved game. When I start a new game it won't go past the main screen and all the options disappear. I'm in the process of deleting every mod I've ever worked on or installed in the process of hoping that will do it. i've reinstalled it multiple times, ran it with no mods, all mods, skse, ect, ect, and nothing seems to work. I'm beyond mad right now ><

12:03pm MST

Uninstalled all mods related to skyrim and expansions and still refuses to load anything. I've done the sound change, 4gb exe change, updated skse, searched and searched for an update before 1.9 because it seems to be the patch. Leave it to Bethesda to mess with something not broken. ><

Yhea, i've been having the same issue as cd21234. I have a lot of mods but they have been running without a problem and then i got all sorts of problems... ofcourse I did install a handful of steam mods as well. could that be the issue?

Most of you all just need to right-click on Computer Tab in Start Menu, select properties, advanced system settings, performance settings, then DEP or Data Execution Prevention. Whenever, usually because of a mod, your comp tries to read-write ram from a poorly written mod, then it crashes. Simply add TESV.exe and no more CTDs...at least worked for me. Other users state that it works well to run older games on WIN7x64. Simply add the old .exe to the exception list. Edited by wallybeav2011

The problem with these "fixes" is that this game is so unstable that there could be millions of things that cause it to CTD with or without an error. Or just freeze and sit there not doing anything except playing ambient sounds. Saying you've solved this is like saying you've cured the common cold. It's laughably sad.

I tried the DEP fix, but I play with SKSE and, surprisingly enough, DEP refuses to add skse_loader.exe to the exception list.

I keep having the crashes and I lost count of how many times I have to started a new game from scratch, advance not too far in the story (The Greybeards is the farthest I was able to go) and I will still get CTDs.

to fix all your skyrim crashes other than the ones that happened cos of mod problems you might have look on your PC taskbar and click start then click Documents then click My Games then click skyrim then you should see a what looks like a skyrim text kinda like a read me file you get in a mod when you downloaded in the past will you open the skyrim text and copy and then past this make shore that it replaces what was there before and you are all set.
