How do I mod skyrim?

Depends. If you want to make custom models of weapons, buildings and stuff, you will need to learn at least basics of 3D modelling and texturing.

If you want to make NPCs, followers, quests, new places, dungeons, cities, islands etc, you won't have to, as CK already has all the resources used in the base game.

It would be best if you would describe what exactly are your modding plans.

But I have to warn you - it's better to start with simple mod, like new Follower, or custom house so you can learn the basics of CK

As michael said, "modding" refers to a very wide range of things, some of which you will do and some of which you probably won't. Just look at the mods on Nexus.

Some of them are re-textures. So obviously, if you wanted to make one of those, you will need to learn how to make textures.

Some of them are re-models or edited animations. So if you want to make one of those, you need to learn 3D modeling software.

Some of them create quests, some of them create spells, some of them create NPCs, some of them edit skill trees. Etc etc. These all rely on learning the Creation Kit, but the things you need to do in the CK vary widely from one to the other, so learning one will be very different from learning another.

Basically, you need to figure out what it is that you want to do, and start figuring out how to do that. Eventually you might want to learn most (or all) of these skills, but start with something specific. The pyramids weren't built in a day.

You should try with simple quest. You can learn more about NPCs and scripting that way. If you have any questions, feel free to ask :)

Great to see new people trying to get into Skyrim modding.

You want to start with something small and simple and work your way onto larger and ambitious projects. I have made many tutorials in the past for the Creation Kit and have a basics series to get you started. Also be sure to check out other channels on YouTube however for a range of other tutorials as each will usually provide it's own useful information.

Click here for my playlist of basic videos for the Creation Kit.

You may also find my page on my website useful here.

Good luck out there.
