Am I the odd one out?

There are cracks for this. They are designed for rather nefarious purposes but they work the same, regardless of your copy. You will need to get a few things, and I can see it probably won't be in your best interest to do so, so I won't bother explaining how to do it.

I preordered the game weeks before it's release, but only about a week later after preordering did I realise I didn't know if it used Steamworks. I found out it does but refused to let Steam ruin my enjoyment of the game. I cannot use Steam simply because where I live we get no internet access. I only get access to it in town in library or university computers which filter out Steam. I looked for weeks to find methods of installing games without Steam, and it is possible if you know where to look, but it's so difficult and the concept of doing so is bloody convoluted.

Simply put: I shouldn't have to do this. If I had brought the game from the Steam store then sure, I'd expect to have to download it. That makes perfect sense. But I don't see why I should have to install and update third-party software that then requires internet access to install and activate a game I brought a physical, retail edition of.

Steam is intrusive. Origin is intrusive. Every other service like these are intrusive. I absolutely hate them and will fight their existence with every core of my inner being but, alas, I have to accept the fact that other that bitching about Steam in the vain hope that a developer will not use Steamworks, I cannot do anything about a game using Steamworks after-the-fact. And so I suck it up, wait about a day after it's release and download a crack.

Do I use windows update - actually NO, I let it tell me what it thinks I need then I read the tech note on Microsoft before committing, I work in the IT world .... and have done for 25 years

Oh well, too bad for you. Meanwhile, the rest of us will be enjoying the game.

What's with you guys? The guy doesn't want to expose his information to Steam so why are you all bashing him? It's sad that he feels this way because he's missing out on a great game but it's nothing to keep beating him up for. If you want to help him then help him, especially with the sandbox stuff, and especially for others that don't know about sandboxing Steam. Help him and stop be a bunch of [expletive deleted]. On a personal note, I have never (and will never) join the Playstation Network because of their security problems, so stop making the guy out to be some kind of paranoid nut because breaches of security happen all the time. Even to Steam.

I'm willing to help him if he wants the help, but from the sounds of the OP he doesn't particularly want it or anything to do with Steam.

What I did to get my game running wasn't exactly straight-forward. It works but it's a pain in the ass and I only do it because I want to play my Steamworks-based games but can't right now (no internet access on my desktop). Another issue is that cracks that bypass Steam aren't released until the release date (if you're lucky) and may not necessarily be trustworthy, but it's really your only option.

Go play on a console then. It is that simple.

yea he should just buy for console if he worry about information being stole

XBL and PSN both phone home. I guess he could stay offline but then he'd never get any patches.
