Know your Computer Limitations

This goes without saying, "Know your computer limits."

After 3 calls for help with some people's FO-4, 'CTD'ing' - Drop on FPS and so on.

I found the common theme is: Too Many Mods that changes textures of various sundry objects / weapons / clothing / Nature and so on.

So the common question I started to ask:

"Do you really need crisper Old World Money Textures, Eye Textures, Dog Dish Textures and so on?"

The answer is: "It's COOL!"

But that was not the question I asked, now was it?

Granted there are A LOT of great texture mods out there, no doubt. But know you computer's limits and stop - think, do I really NEED this -vs- "it's cool"?

Too many texture mods will start to slow your computer down.

A friend thought I should post this, cause he realized he let his WANTS - out weight - NEEDS.

Funny thing, his computer is running a lot better now. He got rid of a lot of background textures that he realized he really did NOT need and in fact did not fully notice: IE: NPC Eye Texture Mod and a few other not-so-important, as in, you do not really see them if you are honest.

Very wise thoughts.

Some graphic cards may put a limit to number of polygon they can handle and some others will not accept uber textures.

I had a NVidia GT640 that handled better polygon mods on Skyrim but not textures, now I have a way better card that is not handling the same mod.

The processor is also an important part in conjunction with the grapic card to consider with.

Exactly - Basically, YES!!! There are indeed A LOT of GREAT mods.

But .... not everyone belongs on your specific computer.

It is so easy to go "Mod Download Crazy" (MDC)

I think that I will have a look through my mods tonight, mind you, most of them add to the game/weapons etc rather than eye candy, still it won't hurt to look. Thanks for the idea.

I had one of the people that asked for help ... well she was WEAPON CRAZY. LOL ...

Until I asked her this question - "How many of those 'awesomely cool weapons' do you actually use in the game?"

Basically out of 46 weapon mods, she only used 3 - 5 of them depending on the "Quest/Mission". So that was basically - 5 Weapon Mods that she actually uses. After cleaning out the "awesomely cool weapons", her game started work better. Because even though she was *NOT* using those 41 other "awesomely cool weapons", they were indeed "Dead Space" that was using up memory in the game.

I don't have many performance issues but pretty frequent CTDs. Usually at cell transitions or in workshop or pip boy mode. Which is peculiar, since knowing my card's limitations, I don't run any texture mods that fiddle with the landscape or weather.

The problem is also that some mods require external texture mods, such as Repaired Sanctuary.

Pretty much this. My game was very unstable yesterday. I started to uninstall mods. Do i really need killable children? lol

What about pipe weapons retexture? I uninstalled prety much all landscape retextures. I don't need pretty rocks.

But sometimes when i'm browsing the nexus it's like i'm a child in a toy store. I want everything.

I had 158 active esp which i think was causing the instability. It's down to 100 now if i remember correctly.

I make pretty conscious choices. What interest me are settlement mods aiming at more immersion and build option, and dialogue mods taking care of the abyssmaly stupid AI comments. Other than that I have 5 weapon mods installed. To get real handguns like the Luger or the P99.

Skyrim is worse (and FO4 will get there).

You find a mod you want. Check it's requirements. It needs ABC mod.

ABC need DEF, which needs GHI etc.

Texture mods, lot's of them, but yeah, they do stress the system.

Once we start getting more quest mods, settlement/housing mods ...

Not to mention the site that shall not be named, but once they get their stuff going...

(of course, if you're using that kind of mod, you do tend to expect crashes/bugs/slowdowns) :P
