UltimaST
OK so I went the criminal path to get what I want. I've been able to steal a lot of things around houses and pickpocket money and stuff. However one thing is bugging me to no end. How on earth can I steal from merchants inventory. The funny thing is that I can steal their money but that's not the kind they have for buying items. The amount they have in their pickpocket inventory is much smaller. Also it seems that some items they sell are on display in the shop so if I buy that the items disappears. When their inventory replenishes where can I find and steal the said items? How anyone figured this out? Basically what I'm asking is if anyone knows how to steal the items merchants have in the inventory from witch you can buy? Ghogiel
It's probably a 'vender chest' that is linked to the actor from which they sell from, the physical chest is either in a proxy cell or hidden just outside the walls or under the floor. Like fallout system, you could use the no clip console command to scout for it if you have the PC version just to see. Or they have changed it and there is a new system where you skip all that chest crap and just tick a box that says merchant and it has an inventory menu right thar in the NPC entry. In other words, I don't think you can steal that stuff unless you find a 'vender chest'
PsYchotic666Joker
as with the previous games you cannot actually steal all the loot, they hide the check and normally lock it with a key ( but there is no key to unlock it ) the chests are normally in the stores cell but hidden way outside the cell where you need to use the console and type in tcl to get there....and if you feel like cheating just type unlock on the chest while going for it lol otherwise...no way to get the hear legit by stealing
UltimaST
Ah I see. So I cant steal their bartering items or money. Well that's kind of silly isn't it? Bah no matter. Perhaps there will be a mod later about it. Thank you guys for making this clear for me.
natelovesyou
I feel that if you could steal everything in their inventory you could easily become very, very overpowered. However, as far as realism is concerned, it would make sense to be able to steal it all...
UltimaST
Yes I think that might be true about overpowering. Well not completely since you still would need to have stealing on a high level to steal very expensive items but yeah. vorius
I remember the first time playing Daggerfall, the most true open-ended game in the Elder Scroll series.... you could break into a shop late at night with just brute strength to bust the door open (Strength check). Once inside the shelves were full of all the items that vendor sold, and you could take whatever you want. Sure, you can go and do this shop after shop pretty easily and end up "overpowered", but such is a decision you make in such an open-ended role playing game. Would you go out and rob banks today for easy cash? Why not? IS it only because you are afraid to get caught? Is it also because you feel it is not morally acceptable? These are the kind of decision you make with your character when you are truly role playing in a game. I feel it is bad practice to do arbitrary, unrealistic restrictions like vendor chests which cant actually ever be accessed to facilitate game balance. It just seems such a flawed approach to me. Let us make our decisions, and furthermore why would a backwater general store in a tiny fishing village have anything extremely valuable? That's one flaw right there. Then if you really think the balance is messed up make it harder to steal these items - better locks, deadly traps and guards which check up on stores more often and even look inside or go inside in a patrol. Then once you rob one store, the game should respond by making everyone more alert and paranoid, so the next time you try to rob a store there is even more danger... UltimaST
Very good point there. Like I said nothing is lost I'm shore a moder will make all you said possible that's why this game is so moddable. The developers make it as balanced as possibly they can to satisfy as larger community as they can and let players change whatever they want with in limits of course. Silverveign
Oh man, if Daggerfall had an ounce of realism I am positive every major city in that game would have lynch mobs looking for my character constantly. Good times...
