Its important to note that the changes should be done in "My Documents" not in program files folder. If you can't change the file or you have to modify permissions, you are most likely in Program Files. I was havning this difficulty as well.

Note that usually you can change files by giving permissions to them in properties. This however does not work for this file since its a change needed in the my documents file. You can make the changes but it doesn't do anything to the launcher. I read this on the other posts a lot but somehow kept missing it.

I've opened the SkyrimPrefs.ini file, it already had bEnableFileSelection=1 under launcher.

Tried copy pasting, no go. Tried changing it while game was loaded then reloading, no go.

Tried making a completely new file, copy pasting the old text, no go.

It's not set to Read Only, and I have UAC completely turned off, so administration issues aren't relevant.

This wasn't even a problem really until I started using the 4gb skyrim loader. I can't load files via NMM now so I have no .esp, .esm etc. from my mods.

No idea what to do. For full disclosure, this is the box version, not the steam version.

EDIT: Herp derp. I didn't realize SkyrimPrefs.ini was in TWO places.

For those who are still having problems, make sure you're editting the SkryimPrefs.ini in your User\[Account name]\Documents\My Games\Skrim folder.

Works perfectly now.

Thanks a lot man :D

First I still couldn't find the second one. I just installed skyrim again. I was searching for the save files from my first version, and there I read: SkyrimPrefs. OMG.

I found it on my NAS. I don't know if anyone else got that, but you can open your start menu, and type in search: save. Then you click on one of your savefiles and look in what map it is.

I hope this works for you guys.

(P.S. sorry for my english. I'm from the Netherlands. XD)

Well If someone still have problem to activate "Data Files", this work for me.

1. First go to ...Documents\My Games\Skyrim then delete SkyrimPref.ini

2. Finaly run the launcher and a message shows and a new SkyrimPref.ini will create and "Data File" will be enabele.

Hope work for you guys :thumbsup:

You need to add that line in SkyrimPrefs.ini located in My document/MyGames/Skyrim or something. I don't use win 7 so figure it yourself, pleasa:D).

Look for the line:

[Launcher]

bShowAllResolutions=0

uLastAspectRatio=2

And add it like this:

[Launcher]

bShowAllResolutions=0

uLastAspectRatio=2

bEnableFileSelection=1

Good luck. :psyduck:

It works. I use Win XP

Glad i found this... google searched it first.... found one source saying put bEnableFileSelection=1 at the top of the page and one saying at the bottom.... neither mentioned that it needed to be put in the launcher section, problem solved =D
