Lets talk about sex....in Skyrim

What would I have? I haven't even been able to marry in skyrim I'm so devoted to the person I love. I'd prefer to make a skyrim version of her and have sex that way. She even agreed to voice act! we live across the country form each other so I can't do the real thing.

but if there was to be anyone I'd ever be able to have a character mary the more personality the better, looks are good but I don't want some over sexualized supermodel with no personality

A lot of this issue comes down to balance. Instant gratification vs earned. Scenarios and situations should be contextual. One prime example is the Whiterun player home. Thinking about things 'realistically' if the Jarl discovered an outsider who could defend his city and people from a dragon they would more than likely encourage that person to stay with them. Saying that they have the option to purchase property is not a realistic outcome. If I was the Jarl, I'd do anything in my power to keep that person as close as possible - which would mean a free accomodation, a tab at the inn and as many feisty wenches as necessary ;)

Lynda the Housecarl does address some of that, just not a lot. Lynda represents a non-earned relationship that is open to growth or abuse - depending on your character. However, none of these relationships have been exploited (in a game mechanic sense).

Your spouse just shares cash, ending each line with 'love'. If you have your spouse as a companion (Aela for example) there is no crossover - if you choose a companion order in dialogue there is no indication of the level of relationship - it is purely two systems (marriage and follower) mashed together with no thought on comibination.

In fact, the very nature of the marriage system is just an excuse for the lack of effort put into personal relationships in game: "You look pretty/You look handsome - the world is a harsh place, it's a surprise there is any procreation - let's get hitched". It's lazy developer bulls***, plain and simple.

I urge mod authors to take time and not rush out releases - we've all had a long practice run in Oblivion and Fallout - let's use that to bring the quality and immersion that (i think) this new engine is capable of.

agreed Also if there is going to be more to romance.... MAKE IS HOMOSEXUAL FREINDLY!

No doubt we'll eventually have pointless "sex on demand" mods for Skyrim, which I'll avoid as I did in Oblivion. Cast a spell, have sex, *yawn*. Hopefully at least one or two capable adult modders will come up with a mod that has a quest line, story line/plot line, and something a tad more interesting than the usual fare. The most interesting adult Oblivion mod I ever saw was one called "Chain Beasts", which was awesome in its concept (BDSM), though a bit buggy. There could be an offshoot of Dibella worship that kidnaps people, for example, and uses them in sexual rites.

why do we need to change her into liking men, you could be lesbian, or chose not to have a relationship

i tried the oblivion sex mods and found them to be generally pointless, with badly made animations. and also quite buggy.

would be interesting to see what people come up with in the future, although sex mods aren't really a huge priority of mine, i'd probably give it a try ^^

not to mention the chains in her bedroom

Contextual romance is the reason I adore games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect (Both Bioware... BethSoft needs to take a leaf from their book!). I genuinely burst into tears when I read about Leliana in the DA prologue after my character sacrificed himself (Look it up if you don't know/can't remember... Making me weep writing about it :pinch:). I was genuinely upset when Moriggan disappeared after DA:O with my character's unborn child (As creepy as that sounds :pinch:). I genuinely feel for Liara and Jack from Mass Effect (Neither died/disappeared... Don't you dare touch them in ME3, Bioware )

The reason I actually cared for the characters, irrespective of the fact that they were fantasy? Their development. It wasn't as simple as "Do nice thing, wear necklace, marriage". Each character had their own story, personality and intrigue that was usually more interesting than the main story line if not just as interesting.

Personally, I'd love to see (Perhaps even contribute to) a Contextual romance (Not just Contextual Sex) mod. Far superior to what Bethesda have done and far superior to what many modders will do with the CK and their ideas about sex.

So do it, and do it well! (I didn't want to make that pun... :ohdear: Oh well )

No rape, just have them want to have sex with one of their same race and also there is the aspect of personality that can make you ignore looks, there are also implied mixed race relationships in TES

Very well written article, your English teacher would be proud

This all reminds me of a mod to Oblivion called Blade Song, which told a romantic story weaved into a greater adventure and a war. That particular story featured very good, albeit amateur, voice acting and had a very deep sense of meaning. If such a thing could be recreated here, I would be more then happy to try it and promote it wherever I can. Sex though, sex is the problem. Because of America's protestant root psychology, people have divided such mods into "acceptable" and "dirty". And when people go dirty, they go as dirty as they can. So it would have to be an effort on modders part to put together a radiant quest line that revolves around sex. That said, it would be nice to have an upgraded marriage system beyond "Here's a Mammoth tusk, let's get married!" A courtship quest line with different outcomes for each date that expand both your characters story while still being fun would be the best option. For example, you live in Whiterun, and you and your future wife/husband decide to go to Rorikstead for a meeting with her/his parent/brother/cousin. On your way, you stop at honneybrew meadery for a gift when some bandits snatch your wife from you. Then you would have to go after her, rescue her and return home safely. Another time you might be heading to dragonsbridge, and it goes fine on the journey there, but when your there a deadra decides to capture you wife and you have to find her through the portal she was taken from. The rewards would probably be either sex or maybe another step in a relationship. These steps could be scripted ie. first date she'll kiss you on her way home, second date she'll invite you for dinner, third date sex, fourth date she invites you to live with her or she'll live with you, and so on and so forth. Sex should be implied, you go to bed she says something like in fable or Witcher, screen blacks out, you get an active ability after the fact (lovers embrace). Maybe there's a few lovers who have prescripted quest lines, like Aela the Huntress having to do with the companions guild. Or The Breton lady you help from the dark brotherhood. Also you should get more and more access to the Npc as the quests continue, like first they'll follow you, then they'll let you manage their inventory. Also, all spouses should be followers. I'm not sure about "seduction" that I'd leave to the modders.

I hope that a tasteful relationship mod will be made. This title defiantly deserves it.

Why not also turn it the other way around, you get captured and they have to rescue you

I myself never really understood why Bethesda never added an in depth romance sub-plot to their Elder Scrolls games. It is possibly one of the greatest incentives in gaming, especially now with all the technological advancement, and our only limit is our imagination, and, well... maybe our video cards....

If they could have taken the time to add in a lengthy and well constructed romance plot to the game from the start, it would have went over the top, gaining that much more recognition, and lengthening it's time in the spotlight. Perhaps they wanted to leave the mushy stuff up to the modders and, passionate Elder Scrolls fans, by maintaining their "professionalism" I'm not sure. What I AM sure of, is that sex sells, as well as romance.

As time passes, and as more and more games are released, they all seem to have an increase in sexual appeal, weather it be the characters, their clothing, attitude, dialogue, they almost all seem to hint and tease the imagination, intentional or not.

As for what I would rather see, that is simple ; Romance. Detailed dialogue/conversation, emotion in voice acting, genuine storyline, hardships and personal moments.

Well it would make the game much more enjoyable in terms of immersion anyways, instead of using the console commands to strip guards naked and humiliate them in public....

Agreed

Considering quests and plotlines in general are going down the tubes since Kirkbride stoped writing for them, i think its a endemic problem rather than just avoiding romance.

I had forgotten about the nudity in Daggerfall, as i have many things about that game... Time to find a system that can run it again... Maybe that 12 year old NEC....

Anywho, deeper relationships and a somewhat functional romance system is something i would support whole heartedly. Even having the screen go black when your doing the nasty, ala Fable, would be a great inclusion. Full on interactive sex? I don't think we're at that social level yet.

Oh so that's what changed

A question came up while reading those articles for Daggerfall, however... And that is sleeping. The Sims has had people actually getting in under the sheets when they go to bed for over a decade now. In Morrowind, no one slept anyway. In Oblivion, they were testing out interactive objects such as chairs and beds. Why the hell, in Skyrim, do people still just sleep on top of the bed? You'd think they would have expanded the animations a little...

If SWtOR can make a free-flowing cape, a game like Skyrim should have at least a set animation where someone actually crawls under the covers. Such a simple thing would also open up the doors for characters changing clothes, sleeping in the buff, getting pissed at you for barging into their room at the Inn when you're trying to steal crap and their going to sleep...

I like porn, but porn in video games, looking back to Oblivion, modders seeing to have problems. Look like most of the time we have 2 options, bizard sex or lolita porn (final fantasy).

Thanks to The witcher CD Projekt introduce originality.

I'm totaly agree with this idea.
