Lets talk about sex....in Skyrim

As to sex... I think it is difficult for studios like Bethesda and titles like Elder Scrolls to implement sex in their productions. Social rules, culture, criticism, there are many reasons. it will probably sound a little stupid, but sex / 'deep' romance mods for games like Skyrim ARE A JOB FOR MODDERS. It's just my opinion. You see, it's easier for everyone, and it keeps everyone happy. Bethesda can say 'we have nothing to do with this kind of content', users are happy  - and, I hope, modders have fun, which is the most important if (I'm not a modder) we should expect them to do anything.

The big companies can make ROMANCE mods, mods that deal strictly with a player and NPC finding friendship and love. However, if sex is involved it gets much trickier. Even fade to black scenes will get the busy bodies here in the USA all flustered. Let's face it, we Americans are a bunch of sexually inhibited, puritanical bigots. If anything hints at sex the Sex-Police kicks in the door and starts shooting. Since the US is such a huge market for games, most companies follow our strict standards. Thankfully sites like Nexus can circumvent the powers that be and put out top quality mods that dabble with the verboten subjects.

Of course, there is a hipocritical quality to it. You can't 'properly' put things in games which have been in movies for decades. Sex and nudity are just the tip of the iceberg there. Take, for instance, the Airport scene in COD;MW2. How many innocent people do you see die in movies? Howmany murders, rapes, executions and war crimes does Holywood depict every year? But you put one scene in a game, complete with adivisory and the ability to skip it entirety, and the 'Morality Police' jump down your throat.

I agree with all of this.. I tend to avoid sex mods like the plague for the reasons that are:

1. they are absurd.

2. they are meaningless

3. it always feels like rap to me. Sure you could potentially ask the person, but since their is no relationship behind it, and you don't even have to really know the person in previous mods it just felt so awkward and out of place.

A mod that fixed these things would be good, but definitely a challenge.

Dude, you need to stop playing video games. Rape!? Seriously? What you are doing in your mind is thinking that real-life rules should apply in a videogame, and thats ok to some extent. As long your modus operandi dont get so screwed up that you see it as rape to have sex with a videogame character without some programmed love-story... Sorry, but people like you make me shake my head so hard it hurts.

What I have to say,is that we should at least be able to have sex with our wife/husband.

Personally I'd prefer sex to be able to the player, the Mass Effect way.

First you meet somebody, then you start talking about each other, then you show them your interest by doing something for them, then you have sexy chit-chat,then it's bed time.

But of course regarding how it is shown i.e. actual nudity and animations,I'd prefer Witcher 2 style.

:D

Stuff like this, while realisitic, would be highly sensitive and very difficulty to pull off in anything approaching a tasteful manner. a lot of it would also have the be highly situational, and almost certianly biased. For instance, bandits would be less likely to rape a male character than a female (Even if we're talking an all female bandit group, as most of the time raping a man is a difficult task in an of its self). Its a really slippery slope...

I know it's basically been established that rape is not a great direction to go in (though I agree with those who've said that decapitation being ok when rape isn't is pretty wtf) I can't let this statement go unchallenged.

Men do get raped, mainly by other men. Bear in mind that rape is mostly about violence and humiliation, not about sexual attraction. It's a huge problem, particularly in places where there is war and general lawlessness, it is under-reported and largely ignored, but it is very real, and no more 'difficult' than raping a woman.

On a related but more lighthearted note, this:

BTW I hope modders will keep in mind the female perspective. For instance if a mod introduces prostitutes, make it an option for your female character to become one. Same for sex slavery, rape, or anything else.

I also would like my female character to be able to use her feminine wiles to get out of certain situations, possibly with a high enough speech skill. For instance give her the option of offering certain services to a guard instead of paying a bounty or going to jail. Or as an alternative to fighting certain enemies.

= KIND OF SEXIST, NO? Or are you starting from the assumption that a male character can become a prostitute / sex slaver and it's only a female one that can't? In which case my bad. All game content in an RPG should provide the same options for a character of either gender, IMO. There's no justification for limiting choices; it's not like rent boys don't exist. And why shouldn't a male character use sexual wiles against a guard or enemy - some guards are going to be gay, some guards are ofc *female* and some people are just horny and will be flattered by anyone's interest.

I have no complaints with the route for generic sex that Obsidian used for the F:NV, just the FTB, but the characters that you could do deed with actually made a modicum of sense (prostitutes, mostly...although that Thorn women was...interesting). I just can't see the characters being well used for it, however, in Skyrim. The player has followers that just appear. I can understand that a follower can be one of your underlings (after you lead a guild you can take on their members as followers), but the followers should not be easy marriages...and after marriage they should change.

Take Aela, for instance. She is actually has a story (OK, she is more than just a name) and connection to you (well, more than just getting her something from a fetch quest...

She did give you her blood to join the Circle and she was the one that sent you after the Silver Hand

). After you finish the companions storyline, she becomes a follower option, and a marriage option. But during all of this we don't see anything of her history. I mean, she enjoys hunting but just sends you off on animal hunts without her, and yet I had a dragon hunt with Vilkas (I think) where he forced out my current follower and went with me so that he could 'help' slay a dragon. I'd love to see a quest where a married Aela responds to a food request with a no, but brings the player out hunting with her

in wolf form and suggesting the player take the same form

. That same sense of individuality, even in the radiant quests that a spouse will give, would make the spouse someone different from what they were before. Perhaps for a spouse who runs a shop you will need to go and get an uber-rare item once in a while for a share of the profits, or for a mage you need to be a test dummy for them, etc.

As for starting the marriage, I'd prefer a much more in-depth system, perhaps similar to the follower points idea implemented in F:NV (Go with Boone and destroy Legion to get access to his quests, Help Veronica with the BOS, etc). Perhaps, and I'll use Aela again, have the requirement to finish the companions storyline,

retain your beast-blood (or a dialogue check as to why you want to give it up)

, and a certain amount of time with her as a follower, perhaps even including totems of Hircine with a speech segment after each totem is recovered. I'd assume that many of the marriageable followers would need a lot of additional background and story added (married because you chopped wood for them, or brought them one frost salts? really?), but Beth seemed to go for the mile wide, inch deep philosophy, here.

As for followers in general, was Oblivion this bad? I came in with the fallout series and, even FO3 had at least some back story to all of its followers (either for-hire, wanting to see the world and looking up to you, or needed to pay the player back for prior actions). Here it just seems that there are a lot of followers that are simple fetch quest followers (complete a fetch and I'll follow you). I've really gotten that vibe from a lot of the plotlines in Skyrim (a couple dungeon crawls to become the archmage...even if none of my magic skills are above 20...just make me a preferred merc, or something, never mind the inconsistency of being harbinger of the Companions and head of the Dark Brotherhood and champion of all of the Daedra).

As for any type of sex mods, just as long as they are semi-tasteful and there for more than just lulz and pron (have realistic buffs such as better skills or a 'well relaxed' to supplant 'well rested'. I missed that in F:NV and never could find a mod to add it.
