draedic
I've spent the past couple of hours reading what people have posted to date about armor, smithing, enchanting, etc. Having said that, I am still confused about what direction I want to take my toon. I was convinced that smithing/enchanting was the way to go at first. I thought it would be cool to see my mage in daedric armor. Here's the thing though. Someone else posted that with the spells available, a mage has an AC of 300 and won't need daedric. Then I got to wondering if I should be trying to skill up light or heavy armor. To get to daedric, I think you have to go steel, dwarven, orcish and then daedric. I think those are all heavy armor. As a mage with low strength, that is not going to give me much room to carry stuff. Hence, why I'm wondering what you guys are doing. I'm thinking that I want to go mage but I also want to shoot a bow and perhaps have a backstab ability. The way I understand it, pure mages with only magic skills have a tough time end game. Might be good to have two or three combat skills. Thoughts?
elvinkun
Well, you can get decent armor rating with spells. But it's sort of annoying to swich all the time to cast it. I though I'll stick with "robes" but by level 30, I was in heavy. If you egt enchanting to 80-100, you can wear whatever you like and enchant it to suit your tastes. Even make spells cost 0 magicka, if you can live with sort-of exploit like that. Personaly on my current character, I'm wearing Ancient Nord (because it's just so cool looking) and make do with spells only. But have a sword and 50 onehanded just in case too. But yeah, enchanting and smithing, both to 100... Make your armor, upgrade the hell out of it or enchant it to oblivion... Can make you pretty damn powerfull. I wasn't going to say it out loud, but this is exactly what I was thinking when I read the OP. Kind of changed the tone for the rest of his post. I imagined a child writing it. Although, he did use proper grammar. +1 for that.
AveryChim
I'd advise against going for heavy armor because the alteration skill ebony skin can give you up to 300 armor rating if you invest in the alteration skill tree (level 3 mage armor). Its expensive mana wise but it'll probably (I've never gotten to lvl 100 smithing) give you a higher armor rating then a full set of legendary daedric armor. Mage clothing can also be enchanted to reduce mana cost ,have very high mana regeneration and are much lighter. Plus you don't need to cast alteration spells for every battle, just the harder ones. Master level alteration can also give you the skill dragonhide, which reduces damage by 80%... so there that. Plus alteration is VERY easy to train. I personally like to concentrate on enchanting, sneak and bow as secondary skills for my mage. Sneaking and bow allows me to take out rooms full of easier enemies without getting noticed or being in any danger. Magic (max level destruction) is more for heavy duty battling. Enchanting gives me 100% reduction in destruction mana cost, allowing me to kick all sorts of ass while having enough mana to cast restoration and alteration spells. Clawdius69Talonious
I had over 500 AC with LIGHT dragon armor on my assassin character. (mind you I had necklace, ring, hat, and blacksmith apron all enchanted for +25% smithing upgrades. And on top of that I drank a pot to give me another +50%, making my legendary improvement quite impressive) That being said, I have been sticking with the whole robes etc thing on my second play through as a mage. Yes, it makes you quite squishy, but the trick is not letting anything hit you. It adds a new dimension to the game, compared to my playthrough as a thief. I haven't played through a heavy armor character yet, but I imagine that there would be significantly more armor value for fully upgraded Daedric. It's been used in that regard at least since the early days of EQ, if not prior. I'm not going to argue for or against the terms use, though.
