Soul Trap

I don't think you have to touch them but you do have to be fairly close. I typically have the spell in hand, charged-n-ready...then get close to tag them with the spell and use the shout that knocks them back to keep them at a distance.

 

I have not tested how far back you can be but I don't think you can be too far away. Hard to tell unless you save, test, reload, test, reload, test, etc.

I always used it in close range, for distance enchant bow and shoot - one second enchantment will be enough if 1shot=kill, stealth is preferable.

 

That's exactly what I do on my thief/archer... Bow enchanted with 1-second soul trap. I get like 1200 charges and can recharge fairly cheaply as it's a 1-second spell so if I don't 1-shot them, it's worth the few arrows it might take as I know I'll get the soul eventually hidden from a distance.

Oh, yea, I have swords and bows enchanted with Soul Trap, but was trying to get more spell casting without losing the trapping of a soul. Maybe a mod can be made to extend the distance to the same as destruction spells. Thanks for the answers.

Of course you can do that with a mod. You could make a custom-scripted fireball spell that will soul-cap and kill them at the same time. lol

The problem I'm having with Soul Trap, is that recharging destroys the lesser soul gem, and you have to keep rebuying them. Is there a way to recharge a weapon without destroying the lesser soul gem?

 

Also, why don't other kinds of soul gems work for soul trapping/recharging? It never gives me the option to use filled petty gem, common gem, greater gem, etc.

The level of the killed mob determines which soul gem you need.If you capture a lower level mob it will automatically go to the lowest type of soul gem that can hold that size soul.

Soul gems are ALL expendable and disappear upon use.

 

Is there a way to recharge a weapon without destroying the lesser soul gem?

As said, all soul gems are consumed when you use them to recharge or enchant an item.

 

The only thing capable of capturing and holding souls without being consumed when used is the unique artifact called Azura's Star.

In my experience the soul trap spell appears to have a medium sort of range. You can use it at a distance, but not a great distance. Im not certain of exactly how far you can get but from my experience it seems that it has a distance similar to the flame thrower spell.
