Rennn Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 I was playing Skyrim, because it's awesome. Suddenly it ctd's. I think "okay, no problem, that's never happened to me before, but it's a common bug."So, not thinking anything of it, I click on my Skyrim launcher. A message from Steam comes up saying that my game is unavailable. I hate Steam right now. How can it just decide to take back my game? How is that legal? I paid $60 for the disk, and Steam can just make it unavailable?! wtf! Anyone know any workarounds to this?
Deleted3158906User Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Right click on Skyrim in steam, Properties, Local Files tab, click "Verify integrity of the game cache." Since this isn't a wide issue, this isn't Steam's fault, even though I know a lot of people LOVE to use it as a scapegoat. But, see if that works.

minngarm Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 Has nothing to do with the steam server, as the cd key confirmation is accessed as soon as you launch it for the first time. Thus no longer needing access to the steam server. Read their offline mode details if you do not understand this. As for that error, it sounds like either your game data is corrupt, you're CD key is flagged as stolen/already registered, or you have a illegal copy and are trying to use it. If the issue persists delete the local data, saving a copy of you're save game in a side folder of course. Reinstall it and place the save game back into the save game folder. Try the saved game, and if that fails a new game to see if it works. If not, call the support number on you're skyrim box for further assistance.

Instead of reinstalling try renaming clientregistry.blob in the steam folder and verifying the game cache. This usually works for me.

If that was the case he wouldn't have been able to start the game. And from what I understand it only checks that once when you install it. The quickest thing to do is try and reinstall the game, or check it through steam. If it crashed, the its highly possible something got corrupted. Edited November 24, 2011 by Beriallord
Skree000 Posted November 24, 2011 Posted November 24, 2011 its a steam message related to DRM i reckon, had it pop up when i was logged into Skyrim on my work pc, forgot to shut it off, came home and tried to play it... after restarting steam cold it went away. think its something related to parallel instances of the application running on multiple steams.... but the way its worded is very nonchalant, like a lot of DRM stuff

It wants to see the Steam server when it launches...if it can't sometimes it has a temper tantrum.
