Handofbane
@darthsloth74I doubt it is Markarth, I have had the assassin show up on characters that have only been to Whiterun and Riften, and once on a character that had only been to Whiterun and Winterhold (with a bare minimum of surrounding locations discovered, while walking on the road up the hillside from Riverwood toward Helgen) @NanjiroThe thugs show up as well, typically in groups of three, and they always have a signed note saying who exactly hired them - not through the DB. This assassin shows up with a DB note signed only by the leader of the faction, with no further details.
BarefootWarrior
Well isn't this just special! I have had many attacks by assassins and I could not figure out why. I still don't know why, but they appear out in the strangest places. One very stupid assassin tried to attack me while I was going head to head with a dragon... dragon took care of that one for me, then i took care of dragon. Is this part of quest that I am not aware of or what?
darthsloth74
I think its exactly the same as Fallout 3 . I think behind the scenes the game determines how good or bad you're being and spawns these guys. Won't know for sure until the Creation Kit comes out and the scripts can be examined. I'm playing a good guy, so I guess these assassins don't like me because I haven't join them? hmmm..maybe I am doing better then Thought. There is always a note stating that I am to dealt with and failure is not accepted...something like that. frakle
I had one attack me on my Khajiit main quest completer/thieves' guild guy. I think it's random.

Well in Fallout 3 it was never to do with the fact that you haven't joined them . It was simply because someone thought you were a goody two shoes and wanted to have you wiped out. While it helps with immersion in some ways I always question these random things. I want to know who is behind a plot and bring them to justice. Shadowy assassins with no leads is always a disapointment since I want to learn more and its never adequately explained. Or I want to join them like Talon Company in Fallout 3 but I couldn't until people made the mods.
Eebowai
before i joined the brotherhood i would get attacked and read the contract they all said.. "heres the gold agreed upon kill this man for stealing / murder / being bad" and then a name.. that's when i hunt this person down
abaris
They come either way. Seems to be borrowed from Fallout where there's either Talons or Regulators after your hide.
Eyrika
I recall reading about the function of NPCs where if you steal something from them, they may send an armed thug after you later. Can you picture that sweet shopkeeper getting a corpse ready and pray for the night mother in order to avenge his stolen petty soul gem?On a more serious note: Go to UESP wiki (Unofficial Elderscrolls Pages) to get some info and start out the dark brotherhood quest line. This happened to me... the Jarl of Riften sent out some guys to kill me after I stole from her. I didn't get caught stealing though, so I thought it was weird. The best part is, i'm now Thane of Riften :P Seems she forgot she tried to kill me?
