Humans struggled to survive as did other creatures all the way from massive dangerous deathclaws, and supermutant behemoths, down to those such as radroaches and even smaller cockroaches. Muttfruit grew wild for consumption and other plants were there to assist in other ways. Rogue robots, almost mindless ghouls, alien zetans and packraiders made the Wastelands more 'interesting' as did other features. The climate, the weather, the geography were all twisted challenges were constantly needing to be overcome. Exotic forces were gathering, growing, in force and focus! A medium hulking megamoth was hurled backwards, dropping 'his' large makeshift machinegun. More large bullets blew holes into the corpse even before it landed onto a slowly rusting metal shopping trolley, crushing it. Semidarkness clung to the partly ruined, smart-materials constructed, urban landscape. Big cockroaches, not actual radroaches, had scuttled away along with their radroach cousins. Even the big radants ('giant ants') were wise enough not to come out into the raging battle. A pair of massive deathclaws hunkered low in a hidden cavity and did not even start to threaten some naked molerats with them. At such times a strange kind of truce seemed to guide such denizens of the Wastelands. The SuperDuperMart complex was infested with danger and not just radmutagenic created supermutants. Ghouls charged towards the Troopers of Steel, ignoring the supermutants who did not bother to deal with them. Like the supermutants, the dehumanised leathery ghouls were past looking like the humans that they had once been, or the other kinds of humanoids that they had been. Yet the ghouls were naked, though unnaturally armoured of greasy leathery skin, while the supermutants bore steel reinforced leather armour. Ghouls had no real impact on those in power armour but common sense understanding was hardly to be found in such mindless creatures. They were cut down by Steel Troopers wielding laserswords, longswords, and chainblades (not to be confused with chainsaws that were better at cutting down trees than ghouls). The Orderhood of Steel fighters did not waste ammo on the ghouls when they needed to focus all of it on the supermutants. Sarah dropped down, even as she finished the burst of fire, and bullets zipped through air that her body had just filled. Supermutants were stupid in some ways but were damned good fighters. The hulking ones were not always the worst. The smallest metamorphs, about the size of heavy human body builders, were smarter than their bigger cousins. The bigger they got, the dumber they got but the stronger they got; or so ran the general rule. Sarah did not trust that such rules were always correct. A rule breaker was the very intelligent, cunning, and brutal behemoth Marshal Smashlunge, was on the small size but only for a behemoth. He, though it was said he had once been a woman, was cleverly commanding the supermutant taskforce attempting to break through to the WashingtonCC International Mall though why was not certain. The Orderhood of Steel had a big outpost there, that it was protecting, but also was trying to keep the radmutagenic beasties away from hidden troves of the 'mall'. Wastelands smells could be disturbing under normal conditions and odours of burnt flesh, spilt blood, and burnt gunpowder did not improve matters. Sarah paused from fighting, surrounded by her Lyons Pride elite platoon, to check the situation on the HUD (heads up display) on her armoured visor. Military data was not as good as she would have liked but it rarely was. The Orderhood of Steel had good quality equipment but always just enough to keep operations running. The current battle was wasting far too many valuable, high grade, resources. Troopers of Steel used power armour robots, PARs, made up of older kinds of power armour reinforced internally with strong robotics. The basic humanoid robots stomped into battle, guided by Steel Troopers, firing off one use multiple rocket launchers and exploded if they got close enough to the enemy to damage them effectively by doing so. At first they had been very effective, killing many supermutants, but now they were being blasted down before they could get into useful detonation range of the enemy. She spoke through the 2way radio network. "This is Knight Major Sarah Lyons, Special Forces. Recall all PARs and send no more at the enemy. We are just wasting them." Seconds later an angry, very rough, male voice responded. "This is Major Machel Barnet, Regular Steel Troopers! Mind your own damned business, Lyons. Command is my concern!" Sarah sighed to herself before responding. "Barnet, not only do I outrank you but the Elder Council sent me here because of your consistent mistakes and failure to halt the enemy." Maharg67
Fallout Alternates One 1.2 [3] Barnet had recently lost much of the respect he had gained in previous years. A combination of extreme arrogance, bitterness at not being further advanced in ranks, and growing drug addiction, had seen his command abilities degrading. He was now on report pending investigation that had only been delayed because of the sudden, surprise, supermutant attack. If he had only been suspected of incompetence, that would have been bad enough, but the so called Spies of Steel had evidence that the fool had turned traitor. Sarah had been sent to deal with the supermutants but also with the chilling instructions to kill Barnet if he proved to be too dangerous to let live. She hoped that it would not come to that but knew she would carry out her orders, if she had to do so. The few PARs were withdrawing and the supermutants did not waste ammo on them. The supermutants instead concentrated, smartly enough, on shooting the main enemies. Smashlunge was proving to be having an amazing influence on his normally chaotic underlings and Sarah was starting to wonder just what was going on. Only now, and then, did a supermutant become too exposed to Orderhood of Steel firepower but even this seemed to be done to pin point Steel Trooper positions. The small nuclear explosion, when it came, rose from a most unexpected and terrible place. Only later was Sarah to learn that Marshal Barnet committed suicide by detonating an explosive package including five very nasty mininukes. In doing so he wiped out not only himself but fifteen Steel Troopers including three other high ranking officers. Many other Steel Troopers were wounded, some seriously, and valuable equipment-supplies were lost. Bewildered, and angry, Sarah had no choice but to withdraw her forces thus letting the enemy through. The highly experienced soldier doubted that it had been a coincidence but had no real idea of what had happened to cause Barnet to do such a thing. Thousands of them had vanished mysteriously! It was amazing even by Wastelands standards. Steel Troopers moved in probing patrols in the area, both on the surface and underground through a crazy maze of PreDoomsday utility networks, PostDoomsday rough made artificial-natural spaces, natural cave systems and more. So far they had found traces of supermutant movements but nothing more. Bizarre evidence was the terrible way that hundreds of ghouls, radroaches, and other such creatures had been horribly killed, devoured, in some kind of inexplicable fashion. Even a few supermutants had met the same fate but all appeared to have been previously wounded ones, as if they had been considered expendable because of it. More psychically gifted troopers had picked up more deeply a more subtle kind of disturbing sensation but even the least psychic felt some kind of disturbance. What, in the Thirteen Hells, had happened? Only small number of reinforcements had arrived from the CCCitadel which was no surprise for Orderhood of Steel resources were already stretched. The New Republic of Northern Columbia was promising to send reinforcements to further cement its wary alliance with the Orderhood of Steel but they were also having troubles. The Enclaven had a large taskforce to the north while Raiders, of varied kinds, were increasing coming in from the ocean to the east. Where they were actually coming from, was a mystery. It was known that the brutally efficient Enclavers came from an open Enclave to the very far north, in the frozen lands there. Sarah studied the few items reclaimed from the bomb site; while there were some both valuable and in reasonably good condition, a few important items would need repairs before becoming usable and there were too many only basically valuable devices. The bomb's detonation had caused the main outpost armoury to go off. Though in different chambers, walled off with metal enforced rock barriers, the blast had been with such force that weapons and ammo were lost. In her power armour, she stepped into the chamber proper the very moment news came to her that another Steel Trooper had died of wounds caused by the bomb blast. That was the use of stimpaks and other specialised medicines, which made three dead on top of the fifteen that had died in the blast. Sarah tried to tell herself that it could have been worse but in truth it had been a terrible loss, in many ways, to her order. The youthful woman was feeling grief but that was to be expected under the circumstances and she was not the only one, of course. Then she saw it, something that should not have been there, that perhaps should not have existed and yet PreDoomsday Stories spoke of such existing once, back then, back before the superweapons had been used including nuclear, biological, and chemical ones on that horrific day. Actually it might easily have been more than one day but nobody seemed to know the truth as the few surviving records appeared to be contradictory to one another. It was a brightly glowing sphere, hard to measure by eye sight because of its exotic nature but about ten centimetres across. She looked upon it and it throbbed visibly as if in reaction to her perception of it. This went along with the stories of the devices that were said to have come from 'outer space', that is from outside of the solar system. Inside the solar system had come to be known as 'solar space'. Why they were identified as such was not known. Strange things happened when such appeared but not bad ones. 'It happened' and light flooded out from the sphere, that is a kind of light that went through everything and everybody. Sarah sank down into a comfortable warmth of darkness, feeling she was captured firmly but gently by a great hand. When she awoke, she did so in a fairly comfortable, secure, and pristine PreDoomsday type bunker complex with some exotic features, some of those being very exotic. Transformed subtly, she made her way past formerly dead comrades now sleeping quietly in advanced medical beds. There were medical robots including MrDocys and MissNursys moving through the air as the big round headed machines were lifted quietly by strong fanjets. Most of the robots were more basic wheeled ones guided by stationary supercomputer network-systems though there were some metallic humanoid Servotrons assisting. The warm, reassuring, strong, kind of female voice spoke to her mind. "There is a limit to how much, and how we can, intervene in mortal affairs but in this case other non mortal forces have done so and, in service to the 'balances', we can and must make counter intervention. There is a limit of what, and how much, we can tell you but we can give you clues that will help you learn what you must. The force that came to this poor, torn, world is chaotic, dark, and in terrible pain. It feeds upon life forces, has become addicted to doing so and uses such to achieve dark ends, but becomes increasingly distorted every time it does so. You will find that the sphere's influence has gone beyond this one place and interesting allies will come to you. I will communicate with you again but only if there is need to do so." Sarah was focused, at that moment, on the happier fact that all those who had died had returned. Even a younger, calmer, Barnet had done so being no longer addicted to superdrugs. He was sleeping deeply and she waited patiently to question him on what had happened to turn him into a suicide bomber. It was odd to consider such matters in relation to a formerly dead man. Eighteen Steel Troopers had died, directly or indirectly, and others had been saved before they could perish. Then there were the many other bonuses, including the surprises that were soon being fully explored or even discovered. She wore emergency survival power armour that was not as powerful, or as well armoured, as standard Orderhood of Steel power armour. Big 3Dwallscreens showed data, of varied kinds, including 3Dvideo of different underground areas close to the amazing new complex that was enclosed in a protective sphere of some unknown kind. Below her, and closer to her than the walls with their big viewscreens, were console operator stations, secondary command stations, Guards of Steel at their posts and even emergency lockers, robots in pods, and much else of the kind. She was speaking to a very much changed Barnet, through a 2way fibre-optic cable network-system. "The vast majority of tech, in the new CCComplex, is basically enhanced versions of our standard stuff. Power armour, mechas, MRE ration-packs, protectron robots, battlerifles, cybernetic implants, most medicines and much else the same. Exceptions, found, so far are xolasers, gravity-lifters, virtabirds, mattercators, regenerative gel treatment tanks, and stimpaks that are greatly improved in numerous ways." The Orderhood of Steel had not even come close to understanding what had happened with the orb, what it was, and even how it got to be where Sarah Lyons had found it; she had seen it though others, who had been in the same chamber before her, had not done so. Nor did any security 3Dvideo camera recordings show the sphere, even those that showed Sarah staring at a certain point on the floor of that chamber. The changes were the only real evidence, along with her word on the matter, that there had ever been such an amazing sphere. Barnet responded. "The PARs (power armour robots) have become sophisticated, smart robots and they use mostly parts that we already have supplies of. We have more of everything, including the PARs and other robots. As for there being more people, more animals, we have found another chamber full of clone humans, along with some dogs, in status-capsules." The Orderhood was moving through the complex, exploring and discovering new features that often surprised. OofS units were also scouting areas of the International Mall and had run into some few ghouls but the number was strangely low considering that there had been thousands there going back just a few weeks. A large number of humans had sought shelter, too late, beneath the mall; too late because a mixture of influences had already begun the ghoulification process in them. It would have been a second nightmare, following the first one of Doomsday, as people began to change into ghouls or to die. Thankfully some became more human like ghoulmans instead of ghouls but some also became even more dangerous ghoulers. Except now transformed rhouls, ghoulmans, supermutants, and others were being welcomed at the complex as new allies. The sphere had transformed the ghouls into more pleasant appearing, and peaceful, rhouls. Ghoulmans became rhoulmans. No ghoulers had been changed because none had been in the area of the sphere's expanding influence. Supermutants that came were few in number but all more intelligent, more cleaner smoother skinned, and with two sexes; they became known as the first superhumans. She longed to be out there, leading the Lyons Pride through the Washington CC International Mall. She longed to be personally searching for any clues, out there, to what was going on. The voice, in her mind, had seemed friendly and trustworthy yet it was her duty to double check the authenticity of its story. Already her sent messages to the CCCitadel had resulted in a good deal of cynicism and even some calls for her to be temporarily stood down for psychiatric examination; it was no surprise that the last had come from political enemies of her father, Chief Elder Owen Lyons, who wished to get at him through his second oldest child. Barnet signed off, having given her his latest report. It was he who was directly in charge of the exploration, and charting, of the as yet largely unknown areas of the complex. As teams moved forward they fully activated network-systems, doing so as carefully as possible. This was especially necessary with security network-systems controlling robots, turrets, and other dangerous devices. Alice was better at commanding something like the CCComplex while Sarah's great strength lay in field command, especially of smaller elite units. Sarah led the Lyons Pride through a newly explored area of the great base, threading through big chambers half full of great cubecanisters of equipment-supplies. As she went, she made sure that her people were fully alert for trouble for it was in that area that an exploration team had vanished abruptly. Eyebots had been sent to find the missing people, local 3Dvideo cameras had been utilised, along with other tech but nothing had worked. Then two eyebots had vanished. Something flittered across the top of large, neat, stacks of big cubecanisters. Sarah noted the movement, suspecting she had been meant to see it, and signalled her people to come to a halt. Then she saw them. The vanished exploration team were all lying on inflated flat-mattresses of light armour material. They were in power armour but with helmets removed and with head propped up on cushions. They seemed to be slumbering peacefully. Two semiactive eyebots were sitting on plastic boxes. Sarah was the first to reach the six member team and the first to verify that they were in fine health. Then she stood, in her standard power armour, looked around and spoke out loud through external speakers. "Thank you for not hurting my people. I think you have proven to be very capable. Can we please talk?" Another flicker, of motion, took place and a tightly black clad figure stood motionless before Sarah. This one was obviously a slimly voluptuous-muscular woman thanks to the tightness of her black skinsuit with only some small body shaped plates to give her any real modesty, one being at the groin. Otherwise she had what seemed to be an ergonomic, aerodynamic, designed utility-belt at her waist. It was dotted with slim pouches and with other items. The figure spoke in an oddly soft voice that carried well anyway. "We are FEARIOs, Fast Encounter Assault Recon Infiltration Operatives. We wanted to meet you, Sarah Lyons, and figured making one of your clumsy loud teams vanish would draw you down here. We are clones and you are one of our clone parents. Hello, mum!" Sarah smiled as she removed her helmet. It was a strange situation but she had been in such before and it was not the first time that Lyons Pride had encountered cloned humans though never before had they met such amazing supersoldiers. Nor had any claimed her as their mother. Lyons realised it was going to take a special 'touch' to deal with these clones but also that she found herself being close to them already. It came to her that she would have to be quite direct with them. "You can call me 'mum' in private moments but not when I am your commander. I will need your special assistance to help solve a strange mystery." The female nodded. "Yes, Major Mum, we have been program conditioned and briefed to assist you to find where all the supermutants vanished to and how they did so. We are four platoons but also support squads and special elements making just over 100 of us. We have robots, androids, and other special tech. We are FEARIOs and we will do our very best to help you so you will love us." Sarah smiled even more. "I already love you! Now, please help me revive my people. Then I want to meet the others of your people. We have much to do, including completing the exploration of this complex." It turned out that the FEARIOs had already done that! She was soon going along with this and the hugging, kissing of faces, that was also expected by the clones. It kept them happy and with 100 plus of them, the Lyons Pride needed them. Yet there was also the factor that she was soon loving them as she did special comrades and only a few others. They showed her the big autorobotic manufactory able to manufacture fairly large numbers of more basic items and much smaller numbers of special items. There were large storerooms full of resources to keep the manufactory running and to manufacture items with. Protectron like factortrons were the main kind of robot but there were many more guided dumb robots or remoterobots. They took her to an advanced monorail station, part of a very deep super secret network built by the federal government before Doomsday that connected many underground superbunkers, VaultTek vaults, and other facilities being mostly smaller bunkers. It had been where many were planned to flee to and perhaps they made it or perhaps they did not. Certainly the Orderhood of Steel did not know or at least Sarah Lyons had not been given such information. Yet it was the great safe-vault chamber that Sarah found herself staring at great, thick, armoured wheel-doors (vault blast-doors) that led to secret technologies and other secrets of PreDoomsday nature. She could not shake the feeling that what lay behind the thirteen doors was linked to the 'great dark entity' that threatened the world, the vanishing of the army of supermutants, and perhaps far more dark mysteries of the world; that is of both the PreDoomsday times and the centuries following Doomsday. She spoke out, largely to herself. "I am not sure that I want to see what lies behind those doors. Thirteen of them being one golden, three silvery, and nine coppery centered and each with a number in Roman numerals that are in logical order as one to thirteen, gold to last of the copper. Yet each has a mixed code of numbers, letters, and other symbols that follow no greater discernible pattern. Below each code, that lies beneath each number, are words that each add up to thirteen letters plus spaces. Again there is no easily discernible pattern." Then she frowned softly. "It is time to call for my younger sister, the genius scientist of the Sages of Steel and master decoder. That is, of course, Terry Lyons. We need to get her here with great speed and security." The supersoldier Submajor Sarah001, having taken up Sarah's name, stood next to her. "Major Mum, a platoon of FEARIOs can get her here in three days if we are allowed just to take her and put her into a special portable status-capsule, armoured of course." Then she passed to Sarah a single sheet of paper with neatly printed words, and numbers, on one side including diagrams. "This was a message sent by Alice Lyons to the CCCitadel that she did not inform you of. It was disguised, and coded, but we found it easy enough to break; we protect our mum." Sarah was surprised to think that her sister would hide something from but then remembered that her sister had changed quite a lot over the last few years, becoming more political and even more extreme in her views. She read the message, sighed softly, and kissed the submajor before speaking. "My sister seems to be becoming an extremist who fears all those who are not traditional human; this includes clones like yourself. You know this, having read the message." Sarah001 smiled. "So we did well in bringing her to talk with you." Which was when clones brought into the big chamber a clearly angry Alice Lyons. She saw Sarah and then she spoke. "You can tell your followers that the message was meant to be picked up by the enemies of our father; that I have been trying to infiltrate an increasingly fanatical faction in the Orderhood of Steel who hate all that do not fit their idea of normality." Sarah smiled. "I know the truth of what is happening. You have fallen for a highly charismatic man, one Captain Daniel Robson, who is trying to manipulate the political situation to further his own cause. Father warned me as did others. The sweeties failed to see the other well hidden message because of the lack of relevant background information and references. Soon the FEARIOs will send out one platoon, plus one squad, and other resources. They will find Robson, and his people, coming here to gain the CCComplex for his cause, that is himself and his ambitions. The Agents of Steel have already been investigating both Robson and yourself. Now you have a chance to redeem yourself. Will you cooperate?" Alice frowned hard but she did so! When it came down to it, she knew where her true loyalties lay. Edited January 2, 2017 by Maharg67

The smaller the armoured robotic ships were, the more numerous they were but most common were the smallest SODs (Skynet Orbital Drones) that, unlike the other robots, were not actual fighting machines. Supercomputer AlphaPrime observed Skynet activities safely from where it was ensconced inside the autorobotic moonbase but it kept a track of far more than the rogue planetary defence network of network-systems. Around it were active transformed humans, some being cyborgs, all being in different kinds of power armour. SpaceHawks, SpaceEagles, and other frame-module ships were busy to-from spacestations orbiting Luna, Terra's moon. A convoy of longer range Spacer ships was approaching from the Solar Federation Mars Colonies. They were coming from Phobos and Deimos that had been altered in their orbits, with some difficulty, to more useful ones. They brought an important cargo, braving attacks by rogue Spacers, and Zetan aliens, to do so. They were Solar Federats, as part of the Solar Alliance, unlike the Venus orbit based Solar Confederation who had been recently made an pact with the zetans. Other Alliance members were the Spacers Belt Union. Rogue Spacers came from massive spacestationships and free moving junk-orbitals also known as space-slums. Most Federats dwelt in synthetic gravity, underground networks and complexes linked to those networks. Solar Federation President Paul Armstrong had won the very recent election but with only a fairly weak margin controlling the lower house, of parliament, the Represenate and an even weaker one in the middle house, the Senate. That did not take into account the Reviewnate that nobody voted for but which served directly the Constitution along with the Code of Rights and Obligations. Opposing his majority party was a crazy tangle of opposition parties and there was an even crazier mix of other factions along with independents. He spoke from his fancy swivel chair, behind his big expensive but efficient desk that was older looking than it actually was, pretend Victorian woodwork concealing advanced technologies. He did so in Esperanto. "Now that we have legally proven that Masters is a Confederate inspired traitor, and he is on death row, we can focus on dealing with the actual Confederation." The pale faced woman, in an everyday type utility-jumpsuit as worn by both genders, sat on another fancy swivel chair but hers had no hidden consoles built into the armrests as the President's chair did. "I cam here to inform you that a far greater threat exists, to our people, than the foolish Solar Confederation or even the damned Zetans. I got an ultra high frequency laserdio message from the approaching Federat convoy that is coming from Mars with a highly secured and well hidden special cargo. It is something perhaps found, perhaps by accident, in the Martian moon of Phobos. I say 'perhaps an accident' because of what is written on the page that I am going to pass to you. That is the note that you will destroy as soon as you have read it; you will know why you must as soon as you do so." She smartly stepped over to the desk and handed him the simple white sheet of recycled materials made, common type paper, and then sat quietly back in her chair while he read it. As he did so his face grew noticeably more pale and a look of grave concern came over his face. Even as he slipped the bit of paper into a special miniature incinerator, he spoke to her in a heavy tone of voice. "What was most feared has come about, it seems. I need to meet with a wide range of carefully selected, most trusted, individuals and groups. We need to find an good excuse to send out warships to intercept, and then to escort, the incoming fleet. The cargo must be rerouted to one of the isolated Lunar Quarantine Stations which means getting one of them up and running. We also need to speed up plans to rescue all the Rogue Spacers that we can convince to come to Luna even if it means that I lose the next presidential election. This is going to be extremely tricky!"
