Edge of the navigable map

I have wandered beyond the notmal edges of the map and fins that the navigable landmass is smaller than seems to have been posted elsewhere.

 

For example I wandered easward from Riften past Stendar's Beacon to this point Map

 

and the view looking south is this

 

Notice the edge of the world, although the LOD version is there the heightmap ends.

 

So, it seems that any posibility of creating areas way outside of Skyrim are out :(

I did this too, I went south and over the mountains, was not easy either but finally did it. I did see the tower of the Imperial City off in the distance. Not a lot of detail, but was surprised that it was even there. I turned off the borders and went quite a ways at that.

Yeah, no heightmap outside of Skyrim, but that doesn't mean anything. The current lod meshes are pure trash for new Tamriel land mods because they're not accurate at all. Fortunately, it will be possible to generate both new heightmaps and lod meshes with the CK, as happened with previous Beth games. We only need a detailed height map of Tamriel, which already exists, and we are good to go :) Edited by necKros

necKros, It isn't really the lack of heightmap thats the problem for a no Syrim mod. As you point out the tools do exist to effectively import from a bitmap, as detailed on the Oblivion/Fallout wiki's.

However I have yet to see anyhing to achieve area mass forrestation/foliage/rocks etc. that really make an area believable and take forever to to manually.

I'm sure Bethesda have such tools but they have never been inclined to release them :(

I might be wrong, but I think some third party tools were roaming the internets regarding that matter. I don't remember, honestly, it's been more than 3 years since I dealed with world maps in Beth games.

 

And we still have to see what the new CK has to offer.

This is why we need an OpenTamriel project. A small team creates the heightmap and then divides the map in to sectors, small enough so that forrestation/foliage/rocks etc. can be done for each sector by 1-3 people.

Custom models for rocks, flora and fauna for single sectors should be the exception to minimize the obvious "patchwork"-effect. Placing trees and rocks isn't rocket science,(almost) everyone can do it. There are a lot of people that can't script or model or just don't have the time, but would love to be part of a project like this. This would also take some of the easy work off the pros,who can then work on something more complicated/creative.
