All of a Sudden Game is Crashing To Desktop when I try to Continue or

Skyrim was working fine. Now every time I try to continue the game or load a previous save it crashes to my desktop. I am using the old version 1.1.21.0 and have been playing on offline mode to avoid the new patch. This just started today 12/4/11. Thought it might be the last save was corrupted but it is doing it on all my saved games. Had no problems in the past and have not changed anything. I am stumped.

The reason that it is crashing is that the game cannot address more than 4 GB of memory, which it utilizes with even a few of the mods that we install. There is a mod called 'Skyrim 4GB' or '4GB Skyrim'. Using this, will help with the crashes, as this allows the game to utilize more than 4GB of memory. You will still get the odd crash, but at least you can get in the game. This is a huge problem that Bethesda will never acknowledge.

I was having the same problem. I had done a few ini tweaks, specifically I had set UgridsToLoad=7. Somehow the Skyrim.ini got reverted back to the original so that all of the saves I used when Ugrids was equal to 7 didn't load. If this is the same case for you, all you need to do is go back into the Skyrim.ini and put it back. This thread here is what helped me:

@shadow56 & noname_1985;

Are you relying on autosaves or continually overwriting older saves? If so, then your saves can (and probably will) eventually become corrupt. Your only real option is to revert back to your last good save, and start following goog saving habits.

Also, you could just have too many saves stored, if you have more than 50 or so try deleting some.

To prevent future save corruption;

- disable all autosaving

- always select "new save"

- if you die, exit back to main menu

- don't use continue (already posted, but good advice)

- delete unneeded saves often

- never overwrite saves

If you want to be sure that the problem is your saves and not an issue with the game itself, try starting a new game. If it works, it's not the game.

Skyrim cannot utilize more than 4GB of RAM? WTF? Was this game written in 2008? So weird. I guess it is a full console port. Code and all. Sux. That is the short route, isn't it Bethesda?

I turned down textures and radial blur to Medium. I also have FXAA turned on, as it is an Nvidia technology and easier on the system than regular AA, apparently. I have AA set to 4 and Anisotropic set to 8 (each half of their full capability). These measures kept me in the game for about 2.5 hours last night with no crashes. I will check again today.

The thing about that is, I have a PC that can run the s*** out of this program. Why on earth can't I? If I want to run the s*** out of this PC, I need to disable half of my RAM?

*facepalm
