Upgrade program from 32 bits to 64 bits.

Recommended Posts

I'm probably just being a silly rabbit for asking this, but I have a cherished older photo viewing program that is written in 32 bit format. I can get it to run in 64 bit but not without some problems. Is it next to impossible for dumb bunnies to upgrade the software to be more 64 bit friendly? I already kind of know the answer to this, but I am desperate which is why I ask. Any and all advice is appreciated!!

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode? If not, then that may help. If you have already tried that and it isn't helping, then consider getting Windows XP on a Virtual Machine and run the program that way. Something like VMWare. In order to rebuild the 32-bit application to 64-Bit you would need the source code of the program you are trying to rebuild. In other words, it really isn't possible from the consumer side.

32-bit software runs effortlessly on 64-bit systems.

Is this program ACDSee 3.1? It had issues with Windows 7 32-bit too, so it's newer OS, not word length that makes the difference.

Hey, all. I want to thank you both for answering my post. I've been busy troubleshooting my software issues this whole time.

The program in question is a photo viewer and manipulator called CompuPic Pro made by PhotoDex (http://www.photodex.com/compupic). The company is switching their focus to slideshow software. I contacted them some time ago and was told (somewhat tersely) that they do not intend to upgrade this software to 64 bit. As a matter of fact it is not recommended for the Vista operating system and beyond. But the software is the best that I've used for picture viewing, organizing and some limited editing. Loyal users have come up with some recommendations to make it somewhat more usable (like disabling Direct Draw), but there are still issues.

I have it running in the proper Compatibility Mode. The program does not want to close down fully all time and I must use Windows Task Manager to close down the background processes. There is also a file called the "def.phd" which kind of acts like our .ini files in that it stores the program's user settings. This frequently becomes corrupted and must be deleted to run the program. It is recreated when you next start the program but not with all of your settings intact. This is still far better than the original ComuPic which would run fine on Windows 7, but in 64 bit it would frequently crash to the point that I would have to restart the whole computer to get my machine working again, hence the upgrade to the Pro version.

I have been a user of this program for probably a decade or better and it is very valuable to me. Fortunately I can still "make do" with it in it's present state. But it would be nice to get it running again properly. I know that this is all probably just fairie dust, but I am grasping at straws in a manner of speaking.

Once again thank you both for your interest and for putting up with the ramblings of a lonely old rabbit.
