MarkQuinn - BANNED

Recommended Posts

MarkQuinn banned.

Trolling in mod thread. Insulting uploader.

Simply UPLOADING a FEW FILES to Nexus DOESN'T GIVE YOU THE RIGHT to tell me what I can TYPE.

Actually, it does. We do too. People who upload to this site should not have to deal with people who insult the work they do for free. They should not have to listen to people who feel entitled to not only complain over every minor detail that doesn't stand up to what 'they' want. You don't have to use a mod just because it's there. If the mod isn't something you're going to like, we don't care what you have to say about it because you will probably never like it so there is no point even trying to pander to your interests.

You're an old enough member to know how this site feels about people who bash uploaders. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Just documenting this here in case he comes back in a year and I forget why he's banned. Personal conversations on the Bethesda forums:

MarkQuinn

Please un-ban my account, MarkQuinn, from the Nexus sites.

I do not ever recall being given strikes 1 and 2. Are these given privately? If so, that hardly seems fair.

Second, regarding the third strike which I was surely given as a result of my comment to Umpa, I did not use vulgarity, I did not use personal insults, I did not make any kind of threat. It was a response to an exceedingly rude comment which he made in his file description. I am more tired than I can tell you of mod authors who assume potential downloaders are criminals, chastising us for comments about lore or realism which haven't even been made yet. I am tired of mod authors who put their work on the public forum but cannot stand to take an ounce of criticism for it. Criticism doesn't hurt them personally, Dark0ne. The scolding and the chastising in his comment, filled with capitalized words, was unnecessary---so I mocked it in kind. Is that truly worth a perma-band?

Look at the age of the profile I'm PMing this from. I have been a member in good standing of the Bethesda forums for many years. Look at the total number of downloads my mods have received on your sites from Morrowind to Oblivion---I have helped contribute to your success. Now you are going to ban me because of a dispute with another member?

In retrospect, I should have sent him a PM rather than hanging my dirty laundry out to dry publicly, and if you would kindly unban me, I promise that all future disputes would be settled out of the public eye.

Thank you for your consideration.

Responded within an hour with the offending comment that got him banned along with a note that if he said he wouldn't do it again I'd gladly let him back on. Sadly can't quote it due to being removed from the conversation on the official forums.

Yes Dark0ne I have learned my lesson and apologize for attacking another member of the forum. And by the way, I agree more than I can tell you about the freedom of speech argument: it's silly when people try to hide behind it, and I would never do so. Our governments may give us free speech, but does that mean I'm allowed to come to your house and say whatever I want and expect not to be asked to leave?

Although I did not feel I was pushing the boundaries of my free speech, I clearly understand now that I was pushing the boundaries of your website. The Nexus sites are far too important to me to lose. I plan on modding Skyrim for a long time, and should I create a gem or two, I wish for SkyrimNexus to be the only place that hosts them. I want nothing to do with this Steam business. If I publish mods, they will be published to Nexus or nowhere.

Seeing my comment directly beneath Umpa's, I can clearly tell that my rudeness was greatly disproportionate to whatever rudeness I perceived in his mod description. Thank you for including both so I could get a better idea of just how unbalanced it was. I must remember to always consider carefully what I say, weighing the importance of saying it with the importance of the Nexus sites to mod enthusiasts like myself, and censor myself accordingly. Please un-ban my account, Dark0ne, and I can assure you that in light of what has happened, I will do just that. If in the future something bothers me so much that I feel I have to take a stand, I will contact a moderator instead.

Again, thank you for your consideration and also for the fast reply.

24 hours later...

Although I see you were on the forums today, you have not replied to my message. In fact you haven't looked at it since first replying yesterday. It's disheartening that you were so quick to ban me for the above message, yet so slow to help me bring the matter to a timely conclusion.

I understand that running a forum is a tricky balancing act. How strict, how harsh, can a person realistically be while still maintaining active traffic and steady growth? When you're really the only one in the business of hosting Elder Scrolls mods, it seems you can be as strict and harsh as you want to be. It's your choice. It's wrong, but your choice.

I did not lie in my message yesterday. I had every intention of censoring myself. But your delay has shown me that you're not nearly as serious about mending the wounds of the community as you are about inflicting them on those you feel have crossed you. And so you have taken a user name away from me because I told a prima donna who likes to upload disco mods that he should grow up and learn to take criticism. A user name, Dark0ne, in exchange for the mildest statement of contempt. If you can live with that, so can I.

As an aside: in American baseball, the batter is always aware of the first two strikes, otherwise it would be unfair. I'll have to get used to the silly Brit version of the rules, I guess.

He removed me from the conversation before I could respond (very mature!) so I felt inclined to leave him a PM. Response from me an hour later:

Funnily enough I'm pretty busy and would have gotten around to your situation in my own time. I'm not your personal lacky waiting on baited breathe to service your every need. I didn't need to read your PM on the forums as I had the email the forum sends me with your PM in it. Hence why I've got your second message despite you removing me from the conversation...

Which point is wrong, exactly?

[sarcasm] Indeed, no response within 24 hours is most definitely the point at which you come up with that daft opinion because I'm just sat on my hands all day waiting for the next mod author to spite in a community I've run for the benefit of others for over 10 years now [/sarcasm] *facepalm*

And so you have taken a user name away from me because I told a prima donna who likes to upload disco mods that he should grow up and learn to take criticism.

The irony of that comment is not wasted on me...

You might want to tell the American who banned you that, then. My rules are to inform users of strikes, so why don't you take your pointed jibe at my nationality and direct it somewhere else. Pathetic.

MarkQuinn

I simply deleted your message entitled "Interesting" without reading it. Dealing with you once has made me pretty sure I don't want to deal with you again. In addition to the kind of soft-skinned people like Umpa who drive me mad with all their crying, I also find it difficult dealing with hypocrites. I wanted to make it right between us, but you showed me you're less interested in maintaining "community" and more interested in wielding your power to ban screen names.

I had hoped blocking you would keep you from contacting me, but somehow you weaseled around that. As the title says, please don't contact me again.
