Settlers automatically uassigned

I know this is a known issue, but I'm wondering if there's any progress made on rectifying it or a workaround.

I was at The Slog putting in some improvements such as the items from Vault 88 that increase happiness. All of a sudden the settlers ran off in the direction of the Ironworks and my turrets facing that direction started firing. Turns out that one of my returning trade caravans had apparently aggro'd the Forge stationed there.

Anyway after dealing with that I returned to The Slog and found every single settler unassigned - farmers, merchants, guards, the whole lot. It was as if I had never assigned anyone in the first place.

First time this has ever happened to me, and I'm curious to know if anyone has found the cause and the solution.

I didn't run into this bug for quite some time now. In my case it was obviously connected to Automatron or the robot station being present at a certain settlement. It wasn't like the above scene at all. I just returned to Sanctuary at one time and all my settlers suddenly had lost their assignments.

I was actually watching a video the other day (can't remember which right now), but it suggested that it happened when things were too spaced out. So say, all the beds were spaced over a large area instead of all together....the settlers would unassign from the beds and the bed count would go down. That lead me to believe that it was because they were too far from them, which would also seem to fit your senario.

I must admit, the only time i've ever had it happen is in Sanctuary, and i spread everything over the full build area there. That's the only big settlement i build up really, prefer the smaller ones. Never seen it happen on a small settlement, so i'm starting to really think there's something in that explanation.

Even if any of that is correct....it wouldn't help for your situation lol.

Size isn't the issue, I've had this happen several times in nearly every settlement including Tenpines Bluff, about the smallest settlement in the game. I've had it happen in a vanilla and a modded game. I've heard others say they think it's tied to the scripts that run when you first enter a settlement, and the more settlements you have and the more they are filled the longer it takes these scripts to run and sometimes they get bugged by events happening nearby or for no apparent reason.

Either way it is extremely annoying when you have 30+ settlers lol.
