Followers going home

How does the game handle the system where the your follower returns home after you part ways with him/her? Do they walk for a short distance and teleport back to their home, or do they somehow manage something else?

I ask this because my main follower, Erandur, doesn't seem bothered by the 3 Frost Trolls that respawn in his temple yard every few days. He can't be bothered to clean them out, either, so everytime I need his help I have to get through the trolls first. (I also need to know if I can somehow disable their spawn through the console.)

They probably teleport..also, they would not have any encounters if they walked because the game doesn't constantly render the whole world and all of the characters in it. That would take way too much computing power. The only place that technically exists at any moment in Skyrim is the area you happen to be in at the moment... So unless you can see the trolls, then they do not exist at the moment.

Yep the game only renders the current area you are in. if you follow him they don't teleport. but once you leave that " cell " there is a high chance for them to teleport depending on how far you go away from it. those trolls are not really there until you enter the area " cell " that they are located in, then they spawn.

Also from what i seen is that around 60% of the time no one attacks until you can see them or within a certain range. Examples i had was with the roaming messengers - trolls/Cats, they wouldn't fight but once i got in range of them to see and etc. they turned around and fought each other.
