Fallout NV weird lag/stutter

Every time I mod Fallout New Vegas even just slightly I always seem to get this bug where the game will have a massive frame drop every time an event occurs e.g. aiming down sights, shooting ground, being shot at, changing weapon and many more.

below is a video I uploaded of the problem,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmyPuZMg2gk&feature=youtu.be

I've tried multiple fixes but cant seem to find the same problem online anywhere. I've got stutter remover installed but it does not seem to fix the issue and I've also fiddled with the inis a little, with things like threaded AI

any help would be truly appreciated

Stuttering is usually because the game ran out of "pre-fetched" video memory and is having to swap some out and load more from the disk which is much slower. "Lag" is usually a much less severe form of the same basic problem (swapping between video and system RAM).

For your sudden FPS drop, please see this entry and this one in the "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide.

Are you by any chance using a Logitech mouse? If so, please read this entry in the same article.

You also need to read the article "HUD-UI-Menu issues". You have some of the mods installed that require a specific install order.

You would benefit from reading the article "FNV General Mod Use Advice".

I've tried to add/increase the heap allocation on both NVSE and NVSR but neither seemed to work; I saw on one thread that NVSR's 'replace heap' does not seem to work in the latest build but I'm not too sure about that. Another note to add is that my load order is sorted by LOOT, but I know LOOT sometimes does not sort out your load order correctly which sometimes causes problems.

Also I seem to be getting the crash 'out of memory' which should relate to the Heap patches but increasing it does not seem to fix the issue (Note. The lag and stutter seem to happen whenever, NOT right before the 'out of memory' crash) Interestingly the 'out of memory' crash was not occurring a couple of days ago when I first started my play through.

Out of Memory is caused by NVSR's heap replacer, disable it. Also turn off bHookLightCriticalSections , known to cause these massive stutters you are having. ENB can also cause these massive stutters if your memory section in the ini is configured wrong. Revert your ini's to stock and don't use tools like configator unless you want similar problems, and stay away from "tweak guides" which are full of misinformation. I think what you are experiencing mostly there is a bad script hanging the engine while you are aiming or misconfigured ENB.

Go into CASM and disable all autosave features and only use a timed save, or hotkey save if you experience stutter when entering new areas or from other enabled triggers.

Better Game Performance.esp Get rid of this mod, I've reported it several times yet it remains on the site. It is a BAD mod and will make your game crash and corrupt your saves.

Oh my god thank you! turning off bHookLightCriticalSections solved all of the stuttering issues, I also took your advise by turning off better game performance and adjusting my enblocal.ini so hopefully the game should be running more stable from now on.

cheers for the help guys, I can't believe it worked!

  • 3 months later...
  • 1 year later...

Changing the NVSR settings as instructed helped with most of the problem for me, but now the only problem I still seem to have is about 2 seconds of a freeze frame most times when either entering or exiting combat. Also I reverted my enb ini files but that didnt seem to have any positive impact.

That would seem to indicate you have a save going on related to entering and exiting combat.

Are you using CASM? If so, then 1) use the "CASM with MCM" version, and 2) disable saving relating to combat. See post #4 where Roy recommends turning off all "save events" except a timed save (and perhaps increase the interval of the save frequency) and hotkey saving.
