How caught theft is handled.

Am I dreaming or do npcs sometime respond to your stealing by just taking the item back from you as opposed to initiating combat ? Or is this a mod that I'm using. It's all so intertwined: the game, the 200 mods, the game..

I ask in part because in the mod I'm working on, my npc is going full on assault as a response to my stealing of a cup--something I'd like to avoid if possible. Worst case I don't add ownership to the items or the cell itself.

Any ideas ?

Happened to me yesterday. I stole a book from Winterhold college library by accident and the orc just did insult me and took the book back.

Might be exclusive to certain faction, never did notice that with items who are owned by merchants, guards or normal NPCs.

I'd start looking into the college library: who owns the books there and what factions does that NPC have (especially crime faction Tab )

Hm. COW: items (at least that I checked) seemed not to have ownership, but cell had ownership designated to the pigface, which makes them his. Time to dig into the factions to figure this out. It would be neat if this was as simple as disposition--I'll check that too.

Thanks guys.

So I set the npc's relationship rank to 2 (we don't share a faction) and here is what I find:

if I swipe an item from a sack that he owns, he takes it back. If I swipe another item from that sack, he goes kamikaze on me. It doesn't matter what the value of the items were: they were 1 gold each. Hm..

Perhaps I didn't test this properly (just used debug.notification(me.getrelationshiprank(him)+","+ him.getrelationshiprank(me)) and checked on this after each theft) but theft didn't seem to impact on relationship rank--even after he started attacking me.
