clintmich
Ok, I have a beef with how the comments sections of Skyrim Nexus has been abused! Never in all my time here on Nexus Sites have I seen a lack of respect to mod authors. Skyrim Nexus seems to be FILLED with under age trolls! It grosses me out to read some of the comments left by users. As a mod author myself, I'm contemplating even having a comments section available for my mods. I realize the comments can be useful(if used properly). But it seems like its just being used for spam, and negative opinions. If you download a mod, and don't like it, leave it at that. If you like it, comment, and explain why you liked it.Its a simple concept. This is NOT YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take your arrow to the knee comments elsewhere!!!!!! Shantih
Report them or simply down rep them. Since you're a premium user that will hide them from your threads. I don't think it's a good idea to disable comments as they can be very useful. Well except of course if you're going to upload something very controversial and know that people are going to be stupid about it. The mods are really doing a great job but there is definitely more trolls with the increase in traffic. If you want to share or simply unwind remember to check out this thread: ;) http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/479517-dumb-user-comments/ Edited December 9, 2011 by Shantih
JimboUK
As Shantih says, just report them, it takes less than a minute and makes the site a much nicer place to be.
Kendo 2
Yeah, they are swarming like cockroaches...these oh-so-clever kids. I have ONE upload and it is just saved games and I have the comments and endorsements blocked because of the general stupidity of 'the new blood' on Nexus since Skyim was released. I've never seen so much text-tard gibberish. The same thing happened with FONV and just like then, they will be weeded out for the chaff they are. Just give it time.
DrakeTheDragon
Just keep reporting them instead of only down-rep'ing. A -rep doesn't have an effect beyond the single post, and as you can read from the many "-9 rep already? Wow, people, you're retarded! This just proves my point."-remarks lately, it will not keep them away, rather support them, attract them even to keep posting. The only real solution is clicking the report button. One single troll'ish comment on your mods and they're gone. That's the rules. Use'em. edit: I just love that "equal opportunity banhammer" term Thandal came up with! Edited December 10, 2011 by DrakeTheDragon
clintmich
Shantih, I checked out that thread. Seems like a good place for a mod author to vent a bit  As for reporting these trolls, ya, I've done it many, many times.I'm sure Dark0ne has thought to himself "this clintmich guy is reporting someone again?" lol It seems that lately, every troll reported, another 2 pop up. They are multiplying like rabbits. I can only imagine the huge increase in traffic that's going to appear on the Nexus after the Creation Kit is released. More traffic means, more trolls. I've only uploaded one little texture tweak for skyrim, and surprisingly only has a couple comments, and they aren't that bad at all. What I'm afraid of, is whats going to happen when I release a BIG quest mod like my FNV Paradise Lost. They'll be swarming like flies.
Zonzai
I find that the best way to end trolling on your thread is to very calmly, clearly and intelligently explain to a troll why he/she is completely wrong or off base without revealing even a hint of rudeness or annoyance. Doing this pisses them off to no end of course, but it shuts them up because they have no way to counter. The thing is you cannot use conjecture, opinion or subjectives when you do. Otherwise your statements will have no more validity than the troll's. I've used this technique in most of the threads for my uploads and it has worked well. I preemptively acknowledge the obvious argument that it is easier to just report somebody. But doing so does nothing to prevent future trolling and creates more (and often unnecessary) work for the already overworked Nexus moderators. Also, I wanted to make one more point. I have sometimes tried to provide constructive criticism to people on the Nexus and found that it has been taken very poorly. Partially because humor does not translate well in text (thank god for smilies), but also partially due to an extreme sensitivity on the part of some. I'm not arguing with anybody here or suggesting that there are no trolls - there are many - but I am proposing that sometimes a lack of eloquence can be misconstrued as a mean-spirited comment (we've all done this). Recognizing this is important because a large part of preventing trolling is not responding to it. And sometimes poorly worded comments are just that, and not purposefully insulting. It's just hard to tell in text. My advice; remain calm, do not respond in kind and try not to take it personally. Vagrant0
Best advice. Report and don't bother to even respond. Most trolls are only doing it for attention or because they really are THAT stupid/immature.
MrDave
The problem here is that any negative comments are being regarded as trolling. If a person has done something wrong, or their mod just plain sucks, for whatever reason, people should be allowed to express their opinions without fear of being punished... this is not the special olympics, where everyone is an equal happy loving winner no matter what. I've seen things from pointless mods to downright harmful mods uploaded. Are the users not allowed to say these are pointless or harmful? I have been restricted in the past, not banned but "restricted", because I was giving advice to someone I talked to a number of times before. Why? I was accused of being arrogant and abrasive. No warning, nothing. And what happened with the person I was supposedly being abrasive with? He had PMed me the same day thanking me for the advice. I was restricted because I didn't just say, "tihs is teh best mod evar"... blowing smoke never helped anyone.
Zonzai
I agree with Mr. Dave. A lot of the comments are taken very personally when they shouldn't be. A good critique is essential to making a good mod. I am an art student and a wannabe writer. I am constantly seeking critiques of my my work as they are invaluable to creating a better work. I have a script (my first ever full-length play) that I am trying to get somebody at the university to read and I expect that the critique will probably be brutal (they often are when you do something new). As an art student nearly every piece of finished artwork has to be critiqued in class. I have learned so much from the critique process. It has made me a better artist. In fact here's an idea, I would love to see a section for critiques of mods as well. Kind of like uploading an image, where the author could choose to show it or not. That would be very useful.
