A cowardly dragon

Having just completed my first training session with the Graybeards, I headed east of the village at the base of the mountain and saw a dragon battling with something at the river. I got his attention by pelting him from the rim of the cliff with some arrows. We battled for a minute, and my health was getting low from a prolonged blast of his fiery breath. I needed to buy a few seconds for a potion, so I shouted "Fus-Rho!" (unrelenting force) straight into the source of his flame. He suddenly recoiled and stopped his attack, gave me a wtf look, roared and flew away!

I never saw him again.

It got me thinking... Is it possible that unrelenting force blasted the dragon with his own flames? I doubt it, but it would be an interesting tactical use of the shout.

Was it a rare A.I. decision resulting from Imperial luck?

I have not been able to reproduce the outcome of this battle. All other dragon battles have ended in the death of either one of us.

Has anyone else had this happen?

I've had a similair experience where I forced the dragon to land using the dragonrend shout.

The moment that he actually landed (on top of a house) I knocked him off the roof with the unrelenting force shout and before I could even get to him he high tailed it out of there.

I've had other creatures run away once I started to weaken them, perhaps it extends to dragons too.

I had a giant hide behind some thick trees. I was camped on a rock ledge where he couldn't get me.

I had to jump off the ledge to draw him out because I couldn't see him and was wasting arrows.

It was annoying, but it did feel like I had a foe who really cared about surviving a battle.

I've had one dragon fly off before the fight was done, but not while I was close to them.

I'm not sure this qualifies as running away, but I've had them orbit me without landing and take damage from my arrows or spells. Then just flap away like it's cool. Like they get bored with me or something.

Its a common "glitch" from what I was reading. Dragons are usually supposed to taunt / attack / Just be Dragons. But sometimes A.I. Doesn't read You and Assumes you are not there, so It torments animals and flies away.

I think at this point, that I'd be less inclined to call it a glitch than a wild-card. A glitch would make it impossible to finish a quest or play the game, or achieve some other objective. It doesn't affect the game in that way. You can pursue and track it. If not, there will be more dragons. It feels more sporting because it brings a degree of uncertainty. It's no longer a binary "kill or die" contest between you and the dragon. There's now a chance that the dragon has a directive that we can re-interpret as a survival instinct, salute of respect or lack of interest toward you as an adversary.

While I was still on the main-quest all dragons came at me trying to make me their next snack, but since I finished it, there were some dragons who seemed to flee, some in midcombat, some after seeing me and one had a really brutal fight with me untill Odvahiing joined the mix on my command! The very moment Odvahiing unleashed his first breath attack the dragon flew away as if hell was after him (well, a dragon, the dragonborn and two dremoras are something close to hell :D). While other dragons seem to actually use team-based tactics! Once I fought two dragons close to a city, which caused the guards to jump in. One of the dragons kept on throwing his ice breath attacks at me while flying, forcing me to reatreat and heal, since my dark elf could withstand fire but not ice, while the other one decreased the guards battle strength. And every time I tried to help the guards the icey dragon stopped me, the moment the last guard was out cold however, they teamed up on me! One coming from the front and one from behind, which could have very well spelled death for my mage but then to my luck some wolfs came, attacking one of the dragons fircely and then to my suprise BOTH dragons tried to escape! They flew in the same direction and after a short hunt they again came to fight me, as if they wanted to avoid the wolfs! I'm not sure if bethesda really gave the a.i. such abilitys or if it was pure luck, but it sure made the game a hell of a lot more exciting! (In the end I won thanks to my rare use of potions resulting in a great amount of useful potions filling my inventory, but they made me use about 30-40 healing and mana potions...) Edited by Nyran
