SOS: Write-Protect from Hell...

Recommended Posts

Hey all, reaching out for a little bit of help here. At the present moment my system is pretty much dead in the water as far as moding goes.

Nut Shell:

Started running into issues installing mods (like FNIS and SkyUI) as in the manager would run it up to 75% then error out with an access denied message or run through the install all the way and then say "Not Installed." Ok, thats new (to me)... Go in to check the drive/partition that I keep my games on and after digging around and checking file/folder attributes it appear that every single file/folder has become read-only (again, new to me). More over, when I go in to adjust the attributes then close the boxes the file/folder goes right back to being read only. I've tried logging in as an admin, normal use (with admin privileges), adjusting rights/privilages, disabling/enabling UAC, reseting attributes in DISKPART, completely FORMATING the entire ruddy drive and the problem is persisting... Anyone able to throw me a bone on this one?

System: Window 7 w/ Service Pack 1 (Fresh install, as in two days old), SSD (Primary), 3 HDD's: all three different, one Velociraptor, one generic Seagate, and one WD external (with 6 partitions between them).

Games: WItcher 2, Skyrim, Fallout 4.

Footnote: Oddest thing about all this is the system is accessing/writing what appears to be everything else (create new folders in the drive/folders yada yada yada). And this new "everything must be read only" has hit every other drive/partition on my computer (save my linux partition folder, tried pasting a folder/file into that partition and as soon as it populated it too was read-only).

You say you've formatted. But I'm not certain whether you mean you've formatted the drive with your win7 OS and re-installed (basically, nuked it from orbit.)

Have you run a virus scan? Do you have an A/V? I'm not saying you absolutely have a virus, but sudden changes in your read/write access is a possible symptom of malware in your OS.

I use Avast and Windows Defender for guarding/prevention and Malwarebytes for troubleshooting.

right now the only A/V I've got running is a spare license of McAfee (which is whats been running for a few weeks now). As for the format on the initial drive/partition, I just went in and uninstalled everything hosted on the partition then deleted everything followed by quick format. Ran a full scan two days ago and running another one now, so far nothing is showing (though I do realize that doesn't necessarily mean anything).

Uhmmmm, then perhaps the OS is corrupted a bit. Might not be allowing admin rights even though you are setting them. Had a similar situation with my win7 six months ago. It got so corrupted that it eventually would not boot. Couldn't find my Microsoft license number so I gave in and upgraded to win10. (This time I bought a non-oem copy so that I can do a full re-install whenever I feel I need to.)

Just to clarify, if you haven't already done a complete re-install of your OS, you might have to try that as a last resort.

If nothing else works, and nobody else here can help, you could try Geek Squad (or whatever equivalent you have where you live) but that's liable to be expensive.

Just a small thought here. It couldn't be that McAffe, are causing this? Both McAffe and Norton are notorious when it comes to sticking their noses into where they should'nt. If you are going for another AV? Try Avast free. It's a good antivirus really.

While I share your sentament about McAfee I'm skeptical of it being the root for all this as I've been running it on this machine for a while now and its the only A/V ever installed on my old gaming rig with out issues. Up until two days ago I was moding to my hearts content with out issues, then all this started.

Update: Not sure that this is much of a solution but after nuking all the drives, reinstalling windows 7 (and the two days worth of updating and etc.) then reinstalling everything else (except McAfee) the problem returned. So, taking LeddBate's lead I went a bought a disk copy of Windows 10, reformatted and reinstalled everything else and bobs your uncle. Everything is working as it should (with the exception of now all the pc/npc's won't move/rigid with their arms out to the sides--which is a separate issue related directly to mods i'm trying to puzzle out.. and no the FNIS Creature de-install trick isn't working as the creature pack isn't installed).

So, if anyone else runs into this issue, the nuclear option seems to be the only thing that works.

PS: Not sure if this is a thing on these boards but if a mod reads this could you mark this thread "(Solved)" or rather "(Solved-ish)." Thanks...
