Laptop crashes during intro

The laptop I am using:

Lenovo y460p

Windows 7 64-bit

6 GB RAM

AMD Radeon HD 6550M

Intel i5 2.30 ghz CPU

I just bought skyrim and within a few minutes of the intro starting my laptop shuts down (never at the exact same time but close to it). It crashes on every graphics setting and every speaker setting. According to speedfan my core/GPU temps are usually at around 50C and go up to about 65C when skyrim is running, but I would not think that a new laptop close to the recommended system reqs would consistently overheat within 2 mins. I also installed my latest video card drivers. Any explanations/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Laptops aren't designed to take the kind of heat that Skyrim's CPU intensive engine forces them to. People do play on laptops but this is not a laptop friendly game. Since you're overheating before you really even start the game then I'm afraid that doesn't bode well for your computers life expectancy. If you must though then make sure you play at the lowest settings with a high efficiency laptop cooler stand and an additional table fan as well and keep it off for at least a half hour every time it overheats but keep the fans running.

A laptop case simply doesn't allow for the necessary airflow needed for large scale modern games nor do they have sufficient fan capacity. Laptops are designed around the concept of longer battery life for business applications. A friend of mine fried his "gaming laptop" on FONV because he just kept booting it back up every time it overheated and it eventually ceased to exist anymore.

equal to or below recommend system settings make sure your on lowest possible also have a fan going after about 15-30mins. i used a 10" inch fan for mine lol if i didnt have one it would lock up and get hot. woundn't crash or that. i played the game for about 8 hours non stop with that fan no issues when removed bang froze up.

pretty much what he had to say.

I only bought the game because it is so popular and I wanted something new to do over Christmas break. I would never go to that extent just to play a game, especially if my laptop can't run it for 2 minutes on its own and I risk damaging it. What a complete waste of $60.
