What's with the ants?

Moving from Fallout 3 to Vegas I noticed something. A lot more bloody bug type enemies! Mantises, Cazadors, Scorpions, and most of all ANTS!!! Especially the ants! It's like they figured out how few ants were in Washington and decided to increase the number ten fold in Vegas. Heck, there's like three nests within easy walking distance of Vegas, Two from the main NCR camp. You'd think they'd send guys to clear them out, or Mr House would send the bots for fear of them chewing up the ground beneath New Vegas. But nope, they just sit there.

Anyone else think the creators went above the call of duty when adding bugs, and ants into the game?

Ants were present in Fallout 2 (cockroaches were only introduced in Fallout Tactics).

Given all the movie references and the importance of vintage science fiction to the Fallout universe having giant ants is entirely justified. There is a 50s movie that is often listed as being influential in that respect. It's entitled "Them!" and the quest "Those!" in Fallout 3 (the one in Grayditch with Brian Wilkes) is clearly meant as an homage. This film is credited as being the first movie in the "nuclear monster" subgenre.
