I just need a quick how-to on texture modding for photoshop

So I thought I would take the plunge and just wet my feet a bit and try some simple modifications to some textures. I tried and well....failed, quite badly. I am very familiar with photoshop, however what I am not familiar with is the nvidia plugin and how it works, what file type it needs to be saved as ect.

What I did and how it didn't work:

-Applied some basic filters to some weapon textures to make some detail stand out a bit, also attempted to recolor one as well.

^Did not work properly when brought back into the game. The texture did not wrap properly on the weapon and parts were black and gray. Im almost positive this has to do with the mip maps however im not sure how to solve my issue.

-Nvidia plugin gives me an error saying the image must be in a multiple of 4 when it is (1024x512) when trying to use existing mip maps. I do not get the error when generating them from the plugin. The second option crates and issue in itself because it will resize the texture to 2048x512.

So where do I stand? I know what I want to do with each texture but im very confused on why things are not working. I have searched in oblivion tutorials, youtube, this forum and I have yet to see any information explaining my problem. To anyone who can help me in anyway I would be truly greatfull.

If you are trying to use existing mipmaps.. you need to have loaded the textures existing mipmaps, sounds like you are just looking at a 1024x512 texture, and no mips in sight. Hence the error.

however if you modified the texture, any existing mips won't really match your changes now will they... so load the texture without the mips, then save and generate new mipmaps. < the error you report that the plugin resizes the texture is totally new to me... I suspect user error, but have no idea what you are doing to make it do that.

When you go to save your texture, try setting it to generate its own mipmaps instead. Also, I'd strongly suggest avoiding changing any settings or doing any unnecessary editing from within the NVidia plugin itself, as I've found that it is often the main cause of texture glitches.

When I open up a new texture it will have one big one and the scale down from there to the right, im guessing those are the existing mip maps. That brings me to my question of how to open the texture without it. After extracting the weapons folder from the archive all I have would be something like steelarrow.dds, seelarrow_m(mapped version I would guess) and steelarrow_n(normal mapped version. I know im coming off as an idiot right now but I do appreciate the help guys.

Also to clarify im using the same sized texture, im not trying to resize them just enhance the detail a bit.

save a copy of the default profile then you can fiddle without fear.

Here is the final result. Much more enhanced detail on the weapons especially the wood on the mace.
