Matth85
Oblivion versus Skyrim? Oblivion had longer guild quest chains.Oblivion had lots of dadreas, which I like.Magic was actually usefull, albeit overpowered if you wanted it to be.You had touch spells, which added a new layer of strategy: Less mana cost, but close up or far away, but higher mana cost. You had unlock spells. Skyrim was more strategic, I.E blockingSkyrim got better graphic.Skyrim got dragons, as in good dragons.Skyrim got a million times better start. Try to play the starter in Oblivion 10 times in a row, then play the one in Skyrim. A dragon throwing rangers off the castle vs killing rats. All in all, Skyrim is better overall. However, the small ammount of guild quest hurts. Becoming the Archmage after a few missions, not having ranked up more than once, is not fun. At least there were more quests and a system in the guilds in Oblivion.I also like to point out the magic system in Skyrim is faulty. Sure, it's OK as a whole system, it lacks depth though. Spells are bound around the 50% less mana perks. WHY build magic on PERKS that are suppose to be BONUSES? ... It's beyond me. There is also no scaling, no unlock spell, no levitation and no "touch" spells. All which are easy to do, and would make magic so much more interesting. Overall, Skyrim is a 8/10, whilst Oblivion is a 7/10, for me. For the fanboys, Morrowind is a 5-6/10 for me. I got lost far too many times, and found it clunky. Not a game for me. Just a thing to mention: Remember people, if you compare the games: You compare without ANY mods. Skyrim is not amazing stand-alone, because of hasty release and console port. Oblivion had a more well-rounded release if you ask me. Cheers,Matth
Elsarian
Let's all put it this way: People who are going from Oblivion to Skyrim are saying the same as the people who went from Morrowind to Oblivion. Those who went from Morrowind to Oblivion said that the game was simplified, very dumbed down, smaller and suited for a wider audience. The same is being said for Skyrim. Now look at what people have done to Oblivion as far as mods are concerned. It made a complete transformation so much that the vanilla game seems like a completely different game altogether and, in a way, it kinda is. So now that people are going from the greatly modded Oblivion over to vanilla Skyrim will of course say that Oblivion was better. However, in terms of the vanilla game, Skyrim is much much better because the game hasn't had to deal with new and unknown hardware and be stripped of content because of it. However, in terms of mods, Oblivion is a slightly better game. But just imagine what modders will be able to do with all this content that is in Skyrim. I am not focusing on how the game is now, I am awaiting for the days ahead and see what this beast will transform into. -Elsarian
Vangarrett99
I like the fact how people used to say, "Skyrim is Oblivion 2.0," but in reality it is Morrowind 2.0 seasoned with a little Oblivion. If you go back and play MW then play Oblivion, then Skyrim, you will see what I mean. Others can say the same - I went to Markarth and was immediately hit in the face with Morrowind as it would be today. Oblivion has it good point, be it few; yet Skyrim, as a Beth tradition, has new stuff that expanded on Oblivion. Dual wield and magic! This is why I love Beth and the Elder Scrolls series, every game is improved upon the other. Actually, Daggerfall had all of these features, plus climbing, plus advanced fast travel. It seems like Oblivion and Morrowind both cut features from Daggerfall, and now Skyrim has gone back and reclaimed some of them. (Not all.)Of course, Skyrim isn't as deep in customization, and dungeons are way smaller. On the other hand, Daggerfall has very poor graphics, and the execution of its mechanics were very sloppy by today's standards. So really, I prefer Skyrim over any other E.S game. Then again, if I'd known about Daggerfall when it was new and fancy, maybe I'd think differently. I like the dryads, witches and priestesses of Dibella in Daggerfall. Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim is lacking in 'aesthetics'. (Not talking about mods)
Karasuman
...every game is improved upon the other. That is a pretty wide and bold statement, and one that many do not agree with. I myself think the series has gone backward in many ways since Morrowind. Not all, but many.
spikies
With all the major improvements in game engines since Oblivion, if we have to compare Skyrim to Oblivion, to me it adds more power to Oblivion and speaks very poorly of Skyrim.
