refresh the steam cache for the game and refresh it's dependencies for graphics, there is a desktop overlay conflict.

How do I go about doing that? I'm having this same issue and nothing I try fixes it. Tried google searching what you said, but most of what comes up is about steam browser, which doesn't seem all too useful lol.

I'll show you then : stand by

Now, there should not be any more problems dealing with this issue other than a messed up operating system.

This steam Profile is on a system drive other than a normal drive, this copy of steam has only Bethesda games installed in it.

I use a 4 terabyte drive that contains all of my games on it externally connected thru USB that I do not want damaged.

Ah that. I tried that yesterday, it didn't make any difference. I even went so far as to delete the game and reinstall it. Still ends with the same result. Black screen that requires a hard reset to get out of. I'm at a loss on this one. I've run into a lot of issues with games before, but never something like this.

Thank you though, for trying

On a side note, I found that if the game just straight up crashes on exit, I don't get the black screen. So now I just need a mod to make the game crash when I'm ready to quit lmao.

if your steam is setup i C:\program files and folders (x86) ? then it's the operating system interfere with the game functions.

This is a known issue.

No, steam is in its own folder on the C drive. Oblivion is actually installed on my second HDD (E drive) which is also in a direct steam folder (E:\SteamLibrary). I moved steam out of C:\programs early on(in my PC's life) when I first got Skyrim and started to mod it using Nexus(also in it's own folder outside of the system folder). Most of my games are on E drive as my C drive is a 525gb SSD.

I've also tried running Oblivion (Fresh install - no mods) as Admin and that didn't fix it either. Maybe I should install it to my SSD and see if it works then lol. I don't see how that would make a difference, but I've run out of ideas.

ok, I am understanding there is a some sort of "black screen" taking place?

on game boot? what?

No, on game exit.

The game loads, and plays fine. But when I close the game, it causes my screen to go black and stay like that until I hard reset my PC. Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing, Alt tab does nothing. I tried turning my monitor on and off just in case, but that also made no difference.

Now that I think about it I could potentially alt tab out and close the game with task manager and see if I can get out that way. Not the best work around ever, but better than a hard reset every time.
