Importing Oblivion Mods without Consent?

Ghogiel nailed it. Not every mesh is modified from Bethesda, meaning they got 100% copyright for it. Thus it is illegal to just throw it out there. Of course, no modder got the money to sue, but they could if they wanted to.

What is more than illegal, it is disrespectfull!

If you do something with a mod, release it, and never got the perimission by the author, I bet you they would stop using the nexus for their mods. Would you really want good mods to be spread on private sites because some people are too greedy?

It takes 2 minute to ask. If it is a no, it is a no. Perhaps the author wants to port it over? Perhaps he likes your idea and wants to do it? It's not your work, so it's not your credit.

If it is a yes, then you can do whatever you want - as long as there is no original asset from other Bethesda games in the mod!

If you really want to do it without asking, you'll just have to wait for the author to die, and 70 years extra. Then the copyright is gone! So, if you can wait for, eh, 140ish more years.

what's wrong with just asking and then moving on or doing it yourself if it's a no.

Most likely there wouldn't be a "no". There wouldn't be a "yes". Just endless silence since the original modder flitted away from the site months or years ago and will never check their PMs.

that counts as a no. I hardly bother replying when I am just saying no, I just ignore it and delete the PM.

I would hope that the interest lies in bringing back popular models from oblivion mods for user use, rather than stealing credit for the work.

What is intended and what happens is 2 different things.

You can write a billion "X MADE THIS!!", but you get all the credit. I got a good example:

I made a ring model. It states it was made by me on the front page. I added a picture, a render, to show it off. Do you know what the first reply was? "Brilliant picture Matth! Really shows the good texture X did!".

This was agreed upon that I should not release it, but the other guy. However, it does show how people will see it. They see the authors name, and the download link. Anything else goes right past them.

If somebody want a popular mod ported, and there is no author: You could:

1) Make it yourself. You got a perfect reference to work from.

2) See if there is an email somewhere. PMs really doesn't work if the guy is away.

At least now: Porting without permission is no good. The CK is soon out. Perhaps the original author plan to fix on the mod and release? Oh, how nice: Random Bob released it without permission and now got a stolen file with 25k downloads and 2 000 endorsement. Totally fair on the author.

Even if the author does not anwer, nobody got the right to port the file over. You either remake it, or find another way to contact the modder/modding team.

Nexus should have something to recognize co-authoring mods so endorsements are shared among every person who made part of a mod, not just the person amalgamating the various things together.

There is. Every mod has a credits section which can list many people. Endorsements are for the mod, not the author, and don't actually -do- anything besides make the mod look better.
