What is your least favorite thing about Skyrim.

Skyrim is a good game.

But it lacks some kind of... balance. It is cool to just sit in a tavern and listen to the bard, watching the firing and injecting yourself an invisible dose of ale. But why can't those NPCs talk in a way they would, if they would be a part of the world? I do not like to compare it, but in Fallout3 it felt like every NPC had a story and a goal.

Remember when you first enter Windhelm and this dunmer women [...] Am I the only one who thought "hell yeah, I'm gonna beat em up and save you!" But you can't. Nothing happens. I mean they intended to, well...be not so nice. It doesn't mean anything, this world ain't alive. And thats a shame...

I just found this HQ like Vigilants of Stendarr hall or something. the 6 guys said exactly the same, as did the only one with a name. I was so pissed by them not really interacting with me, giving me quests or just telling me their story, I killed them all in a rage...

Dammit this country is shattered by a civil war and plagued by a bunch of dragons! But the epic battles aren't much more than brawls between 8 or 9 men and the fights against dragons, well... "oh my god, a dragon *yawn*" maximum 10 seconds later you have another dragon soul.

Reading books is more interesting then doing that civil war questline! have you ever read Ice and Chitin? Or that book where a whole army marched under water and surprised their enemies? Or the one, where a dwemer soldier disguised himself as a centurion...

Also, the ways you can kill something are a little bit unbalanced...

Sneak+Dagger=onehit, without being recognized by enemies.

Physical weapons+Enchanting=onehit, but you are at least recognized.

Highlevel Mage=standing there for 3 seconds, trying to cast a spell, that merely does anything. IF you are able to cast it and are not interrupted...

And some little things are to mention:

I am a mage. There are scrolls of paper in this world. Why can't I craft magic scrolls? Not even at the atronach forge...

Why are NPCs not recognizing the bloody dagger in my hand, while I am standing in a bunch of dead, but keep walking by?

Why is there no barber?

Why are half of the inhabitants immortal?

Why are there so many guards with arrows in the goddamn knees?

...

That's about it. When I first entered a tavern and heard the bard sing away I thought, great. Off to the bards college and what I found was just a series of fetch quests and now I'm a bard without any abilities.

They put that much love into detail without delivering. It really seems the were afraid of their own courage and eventually put quantity before quality. Well, maybe I'm a minority, but I never cared much for balanced fighting or stats. What I do care for in this kind of game is the world living and breathing all around me. And that's where this one falls short by a long stretch.

I think this game is just awesome, but coming off of FNV & FO3 I have one greivance. I am rather dissapointed in the amount of dialogue choices. I loved the amount of dialogue choices in FNV and FO3 (And if you point out that FNV was made by Obsidian to me I'll throw a coffee mug at you! I'm quite aware!). In Skyrim the dialogue feels so very limited. I did just pay off your drinking depts the least you could do is say THANK YOU!!!

hey, hey, guess what????

Did you know NV was made by Obsidian and published by Bethesda ! and don't waste coffee mugs... Muggy would be upset !

i f****** hate the food !!!

utterly pointless... why there isn't a Hardcore mode is beyond me

there are beds and food, thus there should be hardcore mode

Duke Nukem hardcore style. "Heres a new set of daedric armour for you." Dragonborn: "Armour? I don't need no F***'in armour."

Well...do you at least want a new sword? "A Sword? Swords are for pussies!" *punches hand into open palm" "Time to kick some Dragon ass".

*Young women are burned alive by Dragon* "Why do they always burn the hot ones..."

I fail to believe that fitting items in 1 disk was a real issue. Since the disk only contains source code for steam. They were not limited on space, bandwidth maybe, but not data crammed into a disk. Plain and simple, PC skyrim is and always was an after thought. They never intended to put or even create code for PC users. Like all recent code/games, they PLAN on modders to fix things an make the gaming community at large happy without effort at all.

SO, keeping on track with your question. My least favorite thing is that PC users purchased a game thats DX9, graphics that should run on video cards and systems 7-8 years old and have just as much or more possibilities but doesn't.

I always said the game is pretty incredible, not ACTUALLY incredible.

* I dlislike that all of the Jarl's sit the same way and never shift about in their chairs. Why would they all sit and act the same way? It's stupid.

* NPC's should not know what you are carrying, nor should they recognize you if you've changeg into something completely different, especially covering your face. Unless my character's photo is plastered all over the place, no one should know who you are if they haven't met you before. Doesn't make sense.

* Arrows should do way more damage to NPCs and yourself. Sure, you get great one-shot kills at times, but how could an attacker continue fighting if they have three or four arrows sticking out of them in vital areas? In a real situation, one arrow in an arm or leg would cripple that appendage. You nail an attacker through the chest, especially a mage who doesn't wear any armor at all, they should go down unless they are using a berserker potion or something.

* More realistic blade-to-body affects would be nice. You hit someone with a sword or axe, they ought to loose an arm or leg or head (yes, I know beheading does happen in the game, though I've only seen it once). Same with a hammer or mace, it should crush the area hit, crippling the opponent. Of course, if the attacker is wearing excellent armor or using a stoneflesh spell (or something similiar), then they would be somewhat protected against such damaging hits or blows. But it still would be nice to see more realistic combat attacks. There was an Oblivion mod someone did that put that element into the game. Let's see someone do it for Skyrim.

* Daggers and Knives should be usable underwater. Same for certain kinds of spells, like ice ones.

* Spells that cause destruction to the environment ought to do just that, instead of just scattering objects. You hit a tree with an Incinerate spell or a Staff of Fireballs, it should be destroyed with various cool affects - shattering of the trunk, burning of the leaves, etc. Same for any wooden object. Whatever the destructive spell or weapon that is used against an object, it should cause damage in accordance to the power involved with the weapon or spell. Would be nice to see paper goods burn like they should. Throw a damaged book on a fire and watch it add to the blaze.

* Water splashing. Ever notice that your character never splashes any water when they hit it hard, either from a fall or jumping into it? Even wading through water quickly doesn't leave any bubbles on the surface in the movement wakes. You see NPC bodies causing all kinds of splashing when they are floating dead, but alive NPC's and yourself do not. Why is this? Someone definitely needs to create a mod correction for this issue.

* Let's see your character actually lay down on the bed to sleep during rest periods instead of just a black screen. The time indication window can still be there, but instead of the black background, it would be nice to see your character laying on the bed like other NPCs do.

These are just a few things that would make the game even better IMO.

Skyrim was fantastic game, but to nitpick, it had its faults:

  • The UI sucked. The SkyUI mod has a start at the inventory menu, but there's still plenty of other aspects about the UI that show nothing more than a console port.
  • Followers failed. I was hoping for a back story, rich interaction, etc... you can't really even talk to them.
  • The open ended quest finales failed. I can't go into depth on this board, but they all give the feeling that you aren't finished yet.
  • Bugs: lots and lots and lots of them. Understandably, PC games are some of the most difficult to tailor a game to, since there's so many different computer configurations and in such a massive game world, there's so much to be done, but come on, surely we can spend a bit more time with the QA team?
  • Food is useless. Yeah, someone will make a hardcore mod soon which will no doubt take it into aspect, but in practical terms, almost every piece of food heals far too little to be worth it.
  • Skills are unbalanced. For example, pickpocketing trains very fast, whereas alchemy is quite slow (despite the fact that pickpocketing can be done anywhere there's NPCs, whereas alchemy can only be done at specific tables and requires consumable items).
  • NPC conversations are rigid and awkward. I understand there's a heck of a lot of NPCs translating to a massive number of voice files (especially looking at the filesize of the bsa's), but communicating with NPCs feels unrealistic and repetitive. Get within shouting distance of an NPC, and they'll repeat their piece, which you've already heard twenty times. Also, every NPC in the game hates or distrusts you. And they all seem to think I'm behind the latest major event (even when there was no witnesses).
  • What you wear makes little difference. Sure, there's the Thalmor robes, which can disguise you as a Thalmor (and how well depends on your race), but that's really about it. You could wear stormcloak armour while helping the imperials, and nobody will notice. You can present yourself to the Jarl wearing nothing but a skimpy outfit and they won't comment (at least they'll note if you wander around in the nude).
  • The civil war battles generally involve about 8 guys fighting about double that. I can hear them telling stories in the future about how the 8 stormcloak soldiers seized Whiterun from the 20 imperials... I'd rather see massive battles actually worthy of taking a city.
  • Dragons can be nasty with some of the stronger ones, but for the most part, getting easy and dull quick.

EDIT: How'd I forget the one thing that annoyed me the most? Steam.

Least favorite?

Definitely the magic. It's so disappointing. There's such a severe lack of variety in spells that it's almost not worth it. Plus the lack of finishing blows through the kill-cam; kind of feels like it's not as rewarding as melee characters.

But I can't complain too much, Midas Magic is picking up speed. Hoping he does some non-combat magics, Morrowind-style. I hate that the magic is entirely combat-focused. Magic has utilitarian purposes too, dammit!

That said, my disappointment doesn't stop me from playing mages. Especially, as I said, with Midas Magic pre-release. Even those (now what, 15?) small extra selection of spells makes it more interesting and rewarding. Speaking of which... off I go :3

What about that one spell that turns silver into gold? Or the Clairvoyance spell that tells you where you need to go? (it's useful when you're going from Whiterun to High Hrothgar. I kept getting lost on the roads) And then there's always Candlelight.

However, I can only think of those 3. So I do agree that magic could have been more focused on, but I feel that the current magic system is vastly superior to Oblivion's where you could fall asleep casting 1 weak fireball after another. But, then again, shooting a flamethrower from your hand is only appealing for so long.

My least favorite thing about Skyrim is the menus. There is no straight set of rules on what does what. For example, trying to click on "Misc" while bartering could close the whole screen causing you to talk to the person again. And even then when you've gotten completely used to using ONLY the keyboard for menus you get the "Are you sure you want to do this?" pop-ups when doing things like Smithing or enchanting where you have to grab the mouse and click "Yes." Also, when going through a container, why does clicking on something in my inventory equip it? I don't equip items from a container that often so it should be R that equips and click that puts things in the container. THe same thing goes for dropping items. You should be able to Shift-Click like in Oblivion to drop items quickly instead of rapidly hammering R and accidentally dropping something important.
