timbader1
I was told the mods had to be updated as Skyrim and Skyrim special edition are seperate games.
Lisnpuppy
No you can not. The games are different in many fundamental ways. Even if you happened to find one to work, it would in all likelihood mess up your game. Just be patient for now.
OldStacky
According to Bethesda, most will be OK - just NOT SKSE mods and some scripted ones. Though Bethesda is usually wrong.
Deleted3897072User
There's a thread here called "Older mods that work In SE" where people are reporting success with quite a lot of mods. Some mods work "out of the box".If a mod requires SKSE or uses MCM menus it won't be compatible.BSA files need to be unpacked.Textures (dds files) are compatible. Most meshes (.nif files) seem to be compatible although some turn out to be problematic.Scripts (.pex files) are compatible provided they don't require SKSE.Animations (.hkx files) are not compatible (and that includes skeleton mods) Edited October 31, 2016 by OldMansBeard
Moksha8088
Seems that many of the old mods have been uploaded to the SSE Nexus by non-original authors in a 32-bit unaltered form. Hope this does not create a problem down the road.

That a quick way to get banned, & those mods will get removed, the moderator have been doing some brilliant house keeping, considering what been going on! Almost makes me feel sorry for them,(the amount work they been doing) but I do appreciate their effect.
FelesNoctis
Using many older mods seems to work (i've been doing rough conversions and custom patches with SSEEdit for my install), but you have to keep in mind the various record and form changes that Bethesda introduced with the new technology. For my patches I've been copying plugins from CK64-converted mods, deleting what records they have, and then dropping the changes I want from the other mods into that blank file. It's a lot of work though, and not recommended for people who aren't completely proficient and comfortable with the xEdit tools. Really what it boils down to is yes, many old plugins will work, but you may run into unforeseeable consequences that may be irreversible. It's up to you if it's worth the risk. bill8872
I spent the weekend testing the mods I really wanted to keep using, as only I one use has an active author.3 housing mods, 1 player race, and mods that affect Serana, and one follower. The house mods I had to turn into lose files. The BSA file compression is different, so those may or my not work. The race works, but also has BSA file. The follower I tried dose not work. Bethesda changed the face texture enough to make it unusable.Of the Serana mods I tried, one one appearance changer works, the other require mods that also require SSKE, so until that is updated, and those depended on it, will have a long wait.I tested out a combat changer called Queen of the Dammed, which works, as it only has a EXP file. From what I have seen, if a mod dose not use custom textures, they seen to work correctly. I do not intend to use old weapon, and armor mods. Most armor mods need a body changer, and so far the only one I know of that is being updated is CBBE/ Body Slide. Most weapons seem to use custom textures, so most likely may not work. I would say, if you want to use older mods, check that mod page first. I have seen many people ask, and if the author is active they get a response.
