A Gigantic Merger

This is an idea I've had for a while, but don't have the skills to properly pursue. The nexus has been modding New Vegas for 6 years, and has defeated bugs and glitches of all sorts, but what we cant seem to beat is load order LENGTH. It doesn't seem to matter how much you beef up your PC; having too many .esm and .esp files in your load-out can, and often will, essentially render it dead after a while of playing. People try to use load order optimizers and other sorting techniques, but after a while the game simply cant take it. Now you can try to trim down your load list and drop off a few unessential mods, but no one likes that idea.

My suggestion is that some modders could work together to merge together a big number of the most popular / most endorsed / diamond-in-the-rough mods that are available into a single esm or esp file. My own little title for this idea is "The Unofficial FNV DLC" or "Project Nexus".

Now before someone goes yelling "PIRACY" or "CLAIMING CREDIT FOR OTHERS WORK", obviously mod creators would need to give their consent for their mods to be used in such a way before they could be applied to this idea. Also, even an amateur like me can tell that merging mods, testing bugs and otherwise aligning everything to work on such a scale would be a MONUMENTAL effort.

And I'm sure someone will ask " why not just merge them yourself at home with a simple program like Merge Plugins by matortheeternal and his helpers?" Because merging with such programs can be hit and miss, depending on the size and complexity of the mods. Some mods simply wont go together without someone having to dive into mountains of code.

Now I know that what i'm asking for is a stupidly large task. But I think you all know what I mean when I say that load order length is a tremendous problem for even veteran modders, and any attempt to clear this problem up would be a very welcome relief for everyone.

Basically, you have 3 problems (that have already been mentioned.)

1. modding is about customization. Not everyone will agree on the same combination of mods, so you'd need to break it down into separate plugins to allow the user to pick and choose what they want. Needless to say, that kind of defeats the whole point right there.

2. Gathering permission for something that big could very well be impossible, as some modders are not around anymore and even if they are, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll agree to it. I doubt many, if any, would be willing to even try to obtain so many permissions at once.

3. It would be a lot of work to compile and merge so many mods. If you cannot do it, for yourself, and if someone did volunteer, they'd likely design it around their own preference, which pretty much leads us right back to problem #1.

I understand that what you're proposing, you think to be a good idea, but you're not the first person to have the idea of a super mod, but it's always the same problem. People use mods to customize their game to their own taste. That's literally why I even bothered to learn to make my own mods, because I wanted certain things that either hadn't been made or had been done in a manner that wasn't quite in line with my own preferences.

If you want your super mod, you'll pretty much need to make it yourself, for yourself because at the end of the day, yourself is the one person who's personal preference it's actually going to match.

On the plus side, if you're just making it for yourself, you'll cut down a large chunk of the workload by not having to obtain permissions or get others to agree on what should or shouldn't be included.

This idea kind of defeats the whole purpose of modding. At least for me.

After reading your posts, I can see what you mean, and I did have these thoughts before, and I agreed with them. My one thought that seemed to redeem all of this was as follows: if you search through nexus mods and click "browse files", you'll see that the results that appear haven't really changed in quite a while. Project Nevada's still at the top, WMX is still at the top, etc. This told me that most serious modders would have these. Pulling together mods like this is something that I thought everyone could agree on. But, I see the writing on the wall and i'll take your words to heart.

It's not that you did anything wrong, it's just that the idea's been brought up, and even made (sometimes without permission from the authors) many times going back at least as far as Morrowind and it never works out, usually for the same reason.

You could make a big, merged mod for yourself still if it makes your life easier, but I'd advise against making one to upload for the above reasons. If you run into trouble and need help, you can always ask for help.

And for the record, I personally don't use either WMX or PN.
