Kardgar
I would never call it crap, it is a great title and I'm glad I can continue playing it. With that said, If you combine some bad voice actors, with poorly done stories and an a lack of dynamic changes to the world based upon your actions; it all adds up for a "meh" experience. I wouldn't call it bad, but I expected more. I still love the game and will continue to play my modded out version until I'm absolutely sick of it I just stay away from quest driven content and voice actors who I think are poorly done. Make no mistake I enjoy all of the TES titles and will continue to buy them, but without modding and some more development they aren't coming close to their potential. That Forbes article on why Skyrim wasn't rated GOTY by them was well written and perhaps captures my opinions best on the topic.
marharth
Just because new s*** sucks doesn't mean Skyrim is good. I am one of the people who wish Skyrim was better. I am not saying Skyrim sucks, but I am extremely critical of it. The environment doesn't react to what you do and the quest lines are short. Those things are my big problem. I have another posts explaining in extreme detail why Skyrim is not as good as it could of been, and why it went wrong.
EarlyRiser
Lots of opinions both pro and con. It's unfortunate that those who don't like the game did not take the time to check reviews, utube videos and other sources of information before buying the game. I've played many RPG games, some were very linear like the dungeon siege and diablo series for example and some had very good graphics. I favour the elder scrolls games because they encompass me in an alternate fantasy reality where I can roam freely doing what I want, when I want. I can modify it as much or as little as I want, cheat a lot, a little or not at all. With all the help and advice out there I can even upgrade the parts that need it and leave the good parts alone. If the update doesn't fix it, there is probably (or will be) a mod out there that will. I'll spend 1000's of hours enjoying this game and when TES VI comes out, I'll buy that too and do it all over again. 9  of

Honestly, I didn't expect more. Everytime someone sang Skyrims hymns in advance I warned them. The whole industry is ridden by the streamlining bug and caters to the lowest common denominator. That said, it is a fun game. It certainly isn't crap. There have been games really deserving the crap medal this last year. Skyrim isn't among them. But I probably will put it aside pretty soon until the modders have their chance. Unmodded Skyrim is linear and without surprises. One character feels pretty much like the other, choices don't matter and have no effect on the outcome. So yes, its fun. It's certainly worth its money, but it doesn't offer very much in the replayability department. I've played many RPG games, some were very linear like the dungeon siege and diablo series for example and some had very good graphics. I wouldn't call those RPGs. They never wanted to be. They're action titles in a fantasy setting. Edited December 24, 2011 by abaris

soot00
or so many people claim. Just what game am I missing then? Please do not mention another TES game. I have played them and Skyrim is better by any modern standard. I am actually just starting a game of Daggerfall on Dos-box but I am talking about a modern game here. My all time favorites are Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment but they are way to dated to consider at this point. I am talking about a game released in the last 2 or 3 years that even comes close to Skyrim. PC only please. I do not own a console. What am I missing? Dead on. I actually took 3 hours to download Morrowind + all expansions FREE online, also setup the graphics mod etc. I fired the game up and was in shock. What a garbage game! And the nostalgic folk actually doing Skyrim a disservice by comparing it to Morrowind? hahhahaha At least Baldurs Gate 2 has great gameplay still even on modern machines. Morrowin UI, combat and gameplay is sheer utter garbage.
soot00
''The whole industry is ridden by the streamlining bug and caters to the lowest common denominator.'' If this were true I wager the gaming industry would save millions of dollars and just do away with hiring voice actors. Text read only games are far cheaper and easier to produce.
